Philosophy of the Pagan
Hymn To My Mother {vol. 1 The Flagstaff Quartet}

Author: David Seals

Publisher: Northern Arizona University Press

Category: Biography Level: Advanced
Mary Kathleen O'Brien Seals died June 15, 2001, after 76 incredible years as a world-traveler, R.N., mother of 7 kids. The book begins with her oldest son David offering the eulogy at her funeral in Denver, describing the most important event of her life, in his view - the death of Kay's oldest daughter Kathy in 1956, in Japan, 4 years old.
"Demeter lost her daughter too, stolen by death, and searched the world in grief for her all her life. She was the Moon. Like my Mother, she only found Persephone upon the inexplicable resurrection that has come upon her in death; and it is only now that she can tell me what to say. It is only now that she has shown me the way to Homer's Hymn to Demeter, and the ineffable mysteries of eternal life that the followers of the goddess practiced for thousands of years at Eleusis in Greece, where Demeter showed them how to rise from the dead."
The book goes on with one amazing adventure after another with the beautiful, black-haired Irish gal from Flagstaff, Arizona - to Japan where her husband was an Air Force pilot, to Libya for 3 years at another USAF Base, all over Europe and America. Throughout, Homer's elegant hymn is quoted as a parallel description of the evocative power of Woman, both among the classical Ancients and modern goddesses like Kay Seals.
