Math history... Where our magical use of numbers really came from

Math for Mystics: From the Fibonacci Sequence to Luna's Labyrinth to the Golden Section and Other Secrets of Sacred Geometry

How 'bout we take the fear and loathing out of math and put the magic back in? __________________________________

“As thoughtful as it is readable, Renna Shesso’s Math for Mystics is the book I wish I had when I first started trying to make sense of the mathematics that underlie so much of modern magic and traditional occult lore.  Not the least of its virtues is the way it makes magical number theory accessible even to those who think they don’t like or can’t handle math.  It provides a first-rate introduction to a fairly neglected branch of magical lore.”

from John Michael Greer, Grand Archdruid, Ancient Order of Druids in America and author of "The Druidry Handbook"

"A nifty book filled with great ideas and exercises to make the abstract concepts of mathematics meaningful in daily life. While astrology is often the subject that leads many students into deeper levels of esoteric study, it is ironic that while much of our knowledge of mathematics can be traced through astrology, many students of astrology (and esotericism in general) are more than a little shy when it comes to mathematics.

"Everything from tracing lunar cycles on your hands, to using magical squares, and the secret locations of the Catholic shrines to Our Lady is explained in clear, concise, and at times humorous language, making math not only accessible, but friendly as well.

"Math is really the only way to access higher archetypes, and Shesso gives us means to both know this intellectually as well as experientially as part of our mystical path – while staying grounded the whole time. Quite a job indeed.

"Maybe John Michael Greer summed it up best in his support for Shesso’s book when he wrote, "Math for Mystics is the book I wish I had when I first started trying to make sense of the mathematics that underlies so much of modern magic and traditional occult lore. Not the least of its virtues is that way it makes magical number theory accessible even to those who think they don't like or can't handle the math.”

"I couldn't agree more and am adding it to my required reading lists for students.”

So writes modern alchemist Mark Stavish in the March 2007 issue of his VoxHermes newsletter. (PS: Those "Catholic shrines to Our Lady" that Stavish mentions are actually shrines to OUR Lady - they aren't secret but their underlying pattern may surprise you.)

Did you know:
- that the Square of the Moon contains the seed pattern for a labyrinth?
- that Venus is perpetually drawing a pentagram as she travels the cosmos?
- that the root of our word "ritual" means "to count, number"?

This is a new look at numerology, numbers and how we can use them: Magic squares, the numerology of Pythagoras, lunar phases, geometric solids, gematria, the pentacle orbit of Venus, Templars and Tarot - all presented for the NON-mathematical reader.

Many numerology books are strong on numbers - one at a time - while avoiding math, the functional stuff we do WITH the numbers. But that feels like owning a tool without bothering to learn how to use it. As a result, Shesso set out to write the math book she'd longed for back in school, a book short on tedium and long on curiousity.

This book sprang from a sense of joy and discovery, sparked by number-use in astrology, spell-work and Tarot. Shesso's background is in the arts (allegedly a math-phobic path) and her approach to numbers is highly visual - "Math for Mystics" is copiously illustrated. The magic/planetary squares, Tarot, the Golden Ratio, geometric solids and the Fibonacci sequence are some of the topics treated.

Author's Notes: The book is heavily illustrated with both drawings & graphics, which is the only way I can make sense out of math for myself. Surely I’m not the only one who feels this way?!

I wrote this book because I wanted more than I was finding in many other numerology books: More information, more details, more non-mathematician explanations, many more ILLUSTRATIONS and a hell of a lot more fun!
