Author's Notes: I am of European descent and I have searched my entire life for answers about my people. Like everyone else on this planet I have ascended from a tribe, some ancient group that didn’t plunder or exploit and called the Earth their mother. I am not in anyway unique. I believe all of us long for our tribal identity.
Hundreds of books came and went from my life, most of which were simply echoes of the same poorly researched information. I was repeatedly shown nothing more than vague accounts of my people’s destruction by invaders or obscure if not absurd interpretations of the same stories over and over. So I turned to the sciences and poured through anthropology, archeology, geology, ethnobotany and many other fields. My search extended into animal magic and shamanism along side of migration theories, ice ages and quantum physics; I studied mythology as though it was the very pump that filled my lungs with air. And sure enough a picture emerged; not a mere glimpse but a full-blown, vibratory understanding that resonated in my blood. Finally after decades of devotion I wrote the book I had wanted to read 30 years ago, Ancestral Airs.
My research was ultimately rolled into the story of an epic journey. It is given in the voice of an ancient storyteller, Moondog, who invested his life into insuring that his people’s history would not die. He speaks eloquently of his tribe, their clan system, and the shamanic practices that consumed their lives. Moondog describes hundreds of species of plants, their uncountable applications for everything from food, clothing and shelter to rituals and spirit handling as well as the ecosystems they could be found in. Ancestral Airs includes the intimate details of ceremonies, spirits and transcendental journeys as well as the aspirations and fears that all hunter-gatherer groups surely experience in their own unique ways.
The story is set in the British Isles six millennia ago at the spiritual apex of the Mesolithic people who lived there. Ancestral Airs is 700 pages, includes extensive botanical cross-indexes in both Latin and common plant names, as well as a bibliography.
