Isaac Bonewits' controversial book on Witchcraft
Bonewits’s Essential Guide to Witchcraft and Wicca

Author: Isaac Bonewits [a Witchvox Sponsor]

Publisher: Citadel Press / Kensington

Category: Witchcraft History & Practice Level: All
This is the fourth edition of the work formerly known as "Witchcraft: A Concise Guide." It discusses the many kinds of activities (real and imagined) that have been called "witchcraft" over the centuries. It includes a preface and appendix by Ashleen O'Gaea (author of "The Family Wicca Book") , a succinct history of Wicca's true origins, a glossary, a recommended (and not!) reading list, an analysis of where Wiccan ritual came from (and how and why it works) , a new appendix on recent historical research into the "Burning Times" by Jenny Gibbons, and an introduction to Wiccan duotheology. This book is the fruit of the author's over thirtyfive years of Wiccan research and practice and will be quoted and argued over for years to come. The new edition has corrections to some of the author's previous theories and terminology, based on new research and historical findings.
Already it has caused enormous controversy among those who have profited from unprovable and/or implausible claims about "secret Family Traditions" of Witchcraft, as well as Christian fundamentalists and Wiccan extremists of all persuasions. It has, however, delighted scholars, beginning Witches and longtime Wiccans with its blend of history, duotheology, ritual technique, and humor.
Ronald Hutton, author of "Triumph of the Moon, " says, "It has all of the clarity, energy, wit and erudition to which I am accustomed in the rest of his work, and I am sure that it will now take its place in the canon of essential reading for American Pagans. The sections on the USA itself augmented my knowledge of the history of modern Witchcraft there in the most delightful of fashions."
Gavin & Yvonne Frost said, "In the extensive literature on the history of Witchcraft, this excellent book fills a great need. It is written by a well-informed insider without the bias of establishment/ conventional thinking. We both thoroughly enjoyed Isaac's treatment of history that spans the many centuries of suppression and the killing of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of scapegoats. Whatever your spiritual path, if you want to know the truth about the Burning Times and are interested in this new spirituality, this book is for you. Witches and Wiccans: Whatever branch of the Craft you espouse, this book and its overview will put that branch into perspective with the history of the movement. "
PanGaia magazine said, "Fabulous -- an intriguing way to begin research on Witchcraft."
Ashleen O'Gaea, author of "Family Wicca Book, " says, "His reading list alone makes this book indispensable on any serious priest's or priestess' bookshelf."
And Witchvox's own Fritz Jung says, "Clearly some of the best work we've seen in years. We are proud to call Isaac 'one of our own'."
