A Compendium of Herbal Magick
A Compendium of Herbal Magick

Author: Paul Beyerl [a Witchvox Sponsor]

Publisher: Phoenix Publishing Co.

Category: magick, Wicca, herbalism, folklore Level: Intermediate
The most comprehensive and all-inclusive book on the magickal and religious uses of herbs ever published. 330 herbs covered in detail with over 100 illustrations.
Since the earliest times people were aware that all of Nature is civine and that every plant has its own distinct spiritual energy. This understanding has been preserved in folklore of cultures around the world through poems, chants, dittes and spells. From researching this lore, patterns emerge which enable us to approach the true nature of plants' energies. Great care has been taken to include only folklore that has been documented as authentic.
"A momumental work. It's difficult to imagine a more thorough book on the subject ever being published."- Wendell Cooper
"Paul Beyerl has brought forth another in-depth volume that will provide inspiration to advanced practitioners of the occult and beginners alike." - Ellen Evert Hopman
Author's Notes: Those who wish to be magickal herbalists must be able to recognize that all plants have a sacred spirit. Each species and variety has its own deva and each is divine. The number of herbes represented in this book may be one of the more complete volumes to date but it is the smallest fraction of the knowledge which exists. Our work, my friends, is to continue collecting magickal lore and preserving it so that it can be used in a mature, grounded manner. In coming to recognize the spiritual nature of plant life, our view of the Earth as the mother of these divine creatures begins to expand and, before you know it, the magickal herbalist understands the Mystery: that all of life is sacred. Here at The Hermit’s Grove we honor every plant and flower. We consider all trees divine and even treat the weeds with respect as we remove them from spaces in which they have imposed their needs upon those of the herbes and plants who have been given growing rights in the bed being invaded by the weed. We try to communicate with the devas and encourage them to recognize that they can all coexist if they but recognize each other’s rights so that no one species has the right to obliterate another. We know that if our planet’s atmosphere is destroyed that the blackberries and slugs will probably survive but our gardening is to provide a sanctuary for as many species as possible. Part of this work is helping others learn of the divine nature of herbes. We hope that this book will help you learn that every herbal vegetable you eat has a sacred deva, that every meal (including vegetarian meals) involves the sacrifice of life and should be blessed. This book is designed to expand your awareness, to teach you about the potato goddess, to show you ways in which you can work with herbal energy to change your life. My method has been to study folklore but not in the literal sense. - Paul Beyerl [from the introduction]
