A Briefe Historie of Wytches: As Told Through Examples of Burning Times Drama

By the end of the Middle Ages, the popular image of the witch had undergone a reversal. Whereas once she had been admittedly wild and unruly, she had become unremittingly ghoulish, vampiric, cannibalistic, and malevolent. This change in perception, wise-woman to evil-hag, played an important part in determining the fates of women in Europe. Since the image of the witch is tied so intimately to women, the denigration of this powerful archetype could not help adversely affecting the role of females in Middle Ages society. How did this evolution, this transformation, occur?
Author's Notes: As Hamlet said, the purpose of the actor is to hold a mirror up to nature. Popular entertainment, therefore, reflects popular culture. In the enthusiastic world of Elizabethan theater, there is a notable genre that might be called the Witch Plays. In these plays, we see the Witch-Culture of Elizabeth's reign acted out in front of us. Notable among these ceremonies is the fact that witches in three plays appear to be raising energy as part of their witch-crafting.
Zan Fraser is a witch-actor who studied at the NYC National Shakespeare Conservatory.
