A Field Guide to Otherkin
A Field Guide to Otherkin

Author: Lupa [a Witchvox Sponsor]

Publisher: Immanion Press/Megalithica Books

Category: Otherkin/mythology/subcultures Level: All
The Otherkin community is a small but growing subculture of people who identify in some way--spiritually, metaphorically, etc.--as Other than human. Some resonate with dragons, while others believe they were elves in another life, and still others identify as wolves, great cats, and other animals.
Of course, this all may seem a little odd to those who aren't Otherkin. What do Otherkin believe? Why do we believe these things? How does being Otherkin affect how we relate to the world around us--and ourselves? A Field Guide to Otherkin offers answers straight from over 100 survey respondents, collected by Lupa, herself a wolf therianthrope, and elaborated upon by her.
A Field Guide to Otherkin is designed to inform both Otherkin and non-Otherkin about the community and the people and beliefs that create it. Rather than being a collection of statistics, it is a look into the lives of Otherkin, qualitative rather than quantitative.
From the Author I am a lupine therianthrope; I've been Awakened to that about as long as I've been pagan (a little over a decade) . For years I'd seen people posting to listserves and message boards, "Hey, will you fill out my survey? I'm writing a book on Otherkin!" No book ever materialized, other than a couple on specific types of 'kin. So when I was looking for a book idea after I finished "Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone", I decided I was going to write that book on Otherkin.
A year and a half later (as of March 2007) ths is the result. It wasn't an easy project, but it was fun, and I learned a lot. It's not the do-all and end-all of the Otherkin subculture; no single book can have everything. But it's an introduction to the community, and I hope you enjoy it!
About the Author Lupa is a pagan and experimental magician living in the Pacific Northwest U.S. with her husband and fellow author, Taylor Ellwood, Sun Ce the cat, and entirely too many books and art supplies. She is the author of "Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone: A Primal Guide to Animal Magic", "A Field Guide to Otherkin", and is cowriting "Kink Magic: Sex Magic Beyond Vanilla" with Taylor.
