THE AUGURIS: The Mill Creek Book of Shadows
THE AUGURIS: The Mill Creek Book of Shadows

Author: Joseph Merlin Nichter

Publisher: Mill Creek Seminary

Category: Wicca, Witchcraft, Book of Shadows Level: Beginner
In ancient times, an Augur was a priest and religious official who held public office as a consultant and spiritual adviser. The Augur’s main duty was to perform various acts of incantation and divination before all great endeavors, political as well as religious. Although there were several means of divination, the will of the Gods was most often interpreted by observing the flight of birds. It would seem that throughout history, nature has been our most sacred text.
Unlike most mainstream faith groups, Pagans don’t have a universally accepted sacred text, except perhaps the Gospel of Nature. As Wiccans, we share the concept of a Book of Shadows, but the differences in content are numerous. Even the theme itself is indefinite. Some traditions have a single Book of Shadows from which each initiate may hand-copy information, while for solitary practitioners, a Book of Shadows simply a personal magical journal. The Auguris or “Book of the Augur” is both.
The Mill Creek Book of Shadows contains the five labors of Witchcraft; purification, adoration, observation, divination and incantation. These five labors inculcate the axioms the Craft and include cleansings, invocations, sabbats and esbats, rites of passage, blessings, symbol sets for divination and an extraordinary collection of spells, which were fashioned and are practiced by Witches of Mill Creek.
The Veritas system of Wicca was originally established as a secondary tradition to enable the diverse group of Mill Creek Witches to participate in a group ceremony and ritual. Since then, it has become a more popular form of solitary practice. The Mill Creek Tradition or Veritas Wicca encourages practitioners to maintain their individuality while providing the form and structure of the Auguris for both solitary and group activities.
