Healing Ways in the Norse Tradition
Norse Magical and Herbal Healing

Author: Ben Waggoner

Publisher: The Troth

Category: Herbalism Level: Advanced
Written in Iceland around the year 1500, the little manuscript now known only as AM 434a is a treasure trove of medieval healing lore. The Troth is honored to present the first-ever complete English translation of AM 434a.
The bulk of the book is a listing of common ailments with a remedy, usually herbal, for each one. In all, AM 434a lists healing uses for over ninety different herbs. It includes advice on health matters ranging from steam baths to infertility to the influence of the moon on health and human life. Furthermore, it contains a number of magical spells, charms, prayers, runes, and magic symbols to bring health, wealth, and good fortune. Although some of the material in AM 434a can be traced to Classical authorities such as Hippocrates and Galen, and some of the material is borrowed from Christian prayers and texts, the roots of the healing traditions in AM 434a can be traced back thousands of years before the book itself was written.
The translator has added complete notes and commentary, explaining this texts’s historical and cultural background. An added bonus is a translation of some 19th-century Icelandic folk magic charms and spells, which closely resemble the magical charms from AM 434a. Medievalists, historians of science, students of magic, herbalists, rune-workers, and anyone interested in Heathenry or the Northern Tradition will find Norse Magical and Herbal Healing an indispensable source.
