Modern Gothic Pagan Indie Novel Series
The Grimoire (Greenwillow Chronicles 1)

Author: C.D. Sweitzer

Publisher: Amazon Kindle

Category: Occult Horror Level: All
It's business as usual for Lisa Callahan, casual witch and proprietor of the Gothic Renaissance occult shop in Greenwich Village...until she purchases an antique grimoire from a shady customer, and the door is thrown open to a world of secret societies and dark machinations. First, a menacing stranger lays claim to the book and places a curse upon Lisa when she refuses to sell it. A freak accident at the shop shortly thereafter leaves her wondering what she's brought upon herself. Her questions are answered when Ian Kenley, a foreign academic seeking the grimoire for research, meets with her at a local coffee shop. The book turns out to be older and more valuable than she'd suspected, and the secret order from which it had been stolen will stop at nothing to reclaim it. Lisa and her dangerous girlfriend Katherine decide to lay low in Vermont for awhile, but the Infernal Order of the Sabbat soon follows. The violent confrontation that ensues reveals the power of the grimoire when Lisa attempts one of its spells in self-defense. They resist the Sabbat, but no sooner do they return to New York than the ancient tome inexplicably vanishes. Lisa is frantic, having become obsessed with the grimoire's magic. Professor Kenley informs them that another cult has been lurking around the Gothic Renaissance during their absence. They begin a joint effort to track down the priceless artifact, an investigation that uncovers a tangle of alliances and betrayals among the most influential occultists in New York City. The trail eventually leads to a long-abandoned subway tunnel where an entire community of homeless people has recently disappeared.
Author's Notes: The creation of this series over the period of greater than ten years represents an attempt to revive elements of gothic horror in the modern novel form. Elements of modern trends, urban life, natural beauty, mystery, and supernatural horror are interwoven and illuminated through the Pagan perspective.
