Viking Heroes Ride Forth Again!|
Six Sagas of Adventure
Author: Ben Waggoner
Publisher: The Troth, Inc.
Category: Asatru/Heathen Level: All
A hero breaks into the tomb of an undead Viking to win fabulous treasure. . .
A wise king faces enemy armies and hostile magic to win brides for himself and his warriors. . .
A rakish outlaw seduces beautiful women and fights monsters on his quest to clear his name. . .
A lazy and reluctant boy survives battles, enslavement, treachery, and deadly sorcery as he grows into the greatest hero. . .
The Old Norse sagas in this book are all of the type that are often called "romances" or "sagas of adventure". Sagas like this are set in a rather nebulous Viking past, and they've been influenced by medieval tales of chivalry. But what they may lack in historical reliability, they more than make up for in flash and dash. You get everything from lustful dwarves and man-eating vultures, to priceless treasures kept in evil temples by ogre-priestesses, to shapeshifting villains and wicked sorcerors. But of course, the handsome hero always rises to the occasion and wins the princess in the end. Most of these sagas break up the adventuring and fighting with scenes of outright comedy, sometimes poking fun at the saga genre itself, or wryly commenting on social issues of the time. For centuries, these sagas and others like them kept many an Icelandic family entertained on dark and icy winter nights.
The six sagas in question are _The Saga of King Gautrek_, its sequel _The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson_, _The Saga of Bosi and Herraud, _The Saga of Sturlaug the Hard-Working_, its sequel _The Saga of Hrolf the Walker_, and _The Saga of Hromund Gripsson_, plus an earlier version of _The Saga of King Gautrek_ known as _The Tale of Gift-Ref and the Valley Fools_. Only three of them are currently in print in English anywhere else; _The Tale of Gift-Ref_ has never been translated in full before. An introduction, very complete annotations, and a full bibliography greatly enhance this book's usefulness as a scholarly resource. But fans of the _Vikings_ TV series, and anyone who just enjoys a rollicking good read, will enjoy this book as well!
Author's Notes: Ben Waggoner is a freelance translator of Old Norse/Icelandic sagas. This is his fifth book. His work also appears in the journal IDUNNA, published by The Troth.
