The Dance of the Mystai

Author: Tinnekke Bebout

Publisher: Pagan Writers Press

Category: Non-Fiction, Mystery Traditions, Goddess Level: Intermediate
The Dance of the Mystai is an experiential and magickal journey for those wishing to discover the Lunar Mysteries and the ways of Hekate. The book is an organic outgrowth of the work of the author and her Sisters as they have grown and rediscovered the ancient goddess and her rites. Within these pages are a collection of essays, poetry, goddess lore, and practical ideas for growing and living a personal Path based on the Lunar Mysteries.
Reviews: A fascinating book..... Raw, emotional essays about personal journeys mixed in with information about the Mystai Tradition (lunar calendar, rites, spells, etc) . This book centers on Hekate being the patron Goddess of the Mystai, and I am a Devotee of Hekate myself, but one need not be in order to benefit from reading this wonderful and insightful book. I read this cover to cover in 2 days, I could not put it down. The end of this book has an appendix of sorts summarizing the Goddesses the Mystai works with, and included epithets, festivals and dates, and much more. This by itself is an excellent springboard for further study if one is not familiar with the Goddesses listed. The bibliography and recommended reading list is another great resource to make use of for further studies. - Melissa McNair
I have been a practicing pagan for close to ten years, and while I don't follow any one path, I enjoy learning about all different traditions. Dance of the Mystai is about a pagan path called the Mystai that stemmed from the Dianic tradition but has since become something unique and beautiful in its own right. Their patron Goddess is Hecate, though other Goddesses are honored as well. This book is an assortment of essays, poetry, artwork and rituals that are spiritually fulfilling as well as a beginner's look into the mysteries of the Mystai.
Dance of the Mystai resonated with me for several reasons. I love their focus on woman and the sisterhood. The Mystai have created a group that focuses on the needs of all woman from all around the world. It doesn't matter if they are gay, straight or transgender--all woman can find a place with this group. There focus is on strengthening the woman in mind, body, and spirit. Their ideas on feminism were enlightening and thought provoking. I also love that they don't place any one woman above the others. The more experienced members are called "mentor sisters". They guide the new generation in the path but never place themselves on a pedestal.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who follows the path of the Goddess. Whether you are new to the Craft or have been practicing for decades, this book has something for everyone. The essays are often heart warming, the poetry is beautiful, and the rituals are empowering. Every pagan woman should have the Dance of their Mystai on their spiritual bookshelf. - Laura DeLuca
