Meet the Gods of the North in these Short Stories

They Walk With Us

Author: John T. Mainer

Publisher: The Troth, Inc.

Category: Asatru/Heathen   Level: Beginner

Can holy blessings be found in a box of donuts?

Can an angry, grieving skinhead learn to become a peacemaker after a chance encounter with a strange old lady?

Can a rock in a leather bag help a wounded soldier's spirit heal?

The Gods of old still walk the world. They can still be found, if you know how to look. And they bring blessings and challenges, suffering and healing, to those who can find them.

In this collection of short stories, John T. Mainer explores how the ancient Gods might still be found, and how they might bless us as our paths cross theirs. From war-torn Bosnia and Afghanistan, to the peaceful green hills of British Columbia and the bustle of downtown Vancouver, he shows us how—perhaps—we might find them today. Even the most ordinary of places can turn out to be not so ordinary at all. . . and even the most ordinary-seeming person could turn out to be a God in disguise.

Author's Notes: John T. Mainer found Heathenry in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving as a Signalman with 744 Communication Regiment, attached variously to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. Finding a home with the Heathen Freehold Society of British Columbia, he became active in the local Heathen and multifaith community, helping to organize various local events. Now serving as Freyr or chief of the Heathen Freehold, John is active in the international Heathen community through service as a Steward for Western Canada and the Military for the Troth, as well as serving on its Rede. Married for almost twenty years, with three daughters, John solved the problem of the lack of good heathen children's stories by collecting the Heathen Freehold's skald's works together in Kindertales I and Kindertales II (available through . When not with his family, or volunteering in the heathen community, he works with a local shipyard to build boats for various NATO militaries.
