Historical Fantasy Inspired by Bardic Tradition of the British Isles|
Foreshadow: book One of the Saga of the Dragon Born
Author: Cynthia Clay
Publisher: Amazon Kindle
Category: Pagan Fantasy Level: All
This is the first book in a series. There are three out and there will one more.
“I am Princess Royal Burta, and I call out your challenger!”
In a time when dragons and gods seduced mortals, greedy kings plot to overthrow the tiny, impoverished kingdom of Allsongs, tempted by the promise of its future. It is said the hope and best defense of Allsongs lies in the person of a small child, Tristabé-airta, the Princess Royal, whose magic always works. Yet, it is the king and sword souled dragon born children whom the enemy kings fear will usurp their kingdoms. An assassin is sent to kill them. One of these children is surely a threat, Princess Burta who trains in arms for the day she can snatch the Allsongs kingdom from Tristabé-airta. While Tristabé-airta knows Burta hates her, Tristabe-airta must do what she can to save her or Allsongs will fall when they come of age.
“Foreshadow is a beautifully written fantasy tale that wraps readers in poetry, new mythology and magic. ...If this is the precursor for things to come in the series, we are in for quite an adventure.” –Compulsion Reads
“Clay takes readers into a fantasy world steeped in tradition. In this novel, magic and dragons are commonplace, gods and goddesses take an active role in the lives of mortals, and poets are high-ranking, powerful individuals. The story opens with the birth of the princess Tristabe-airt...”–Kirkus Reviews
Below are reader reviews from Amazon.
"I was completely hooked on this imaginative tale of magically empowered children, kings with dragon alter-egos, and the plotting that goes on. Clay's unique use of language, especially dialog, gives the book a special flavor, somewhat antique - of a long-ago era, always expressive, with distinctive dialects for different classes of characters. She builds her world subtly with interestingly different societal conventions from the "real world". I liked the retreat center for healing. The quest for power in her kingdoms may involve fighting but it also involves leaders with good intentions, giving the tale an optimistic tone. Her characters are not dying right-and-left like they do in Game of Thrones. I'm looking forward to Book 2. Pam 5 stars at Amazon
"Cynthia has created an amazingly rich and enchanting world filled with kingdoms and creatures, heroes and villains. It is a world in which poetry is magic, and songs have power. It isn’t easy to make a completely imaginary world seem real, but with a full cast of characters, she does an excellent job of it. The writing is lyrical and the entire piece has an otherworldly tone. More importantly, it is a fun read from beginning to end. If you are into fantasy novels you should pick this up, and start saving for volume 2." Robert Silverstein Amazon 5 stars
"Really first-rate. Has a bit of an edge to it, a sort of amused author's voice that give a bright feel. The two female contenders are very well-done!" Jeeves, Amazon 5 stars
Author's Notes: The ancient Celts of the British Isles have long inspired me both as an author as a Witch. In my Saga of the Dragon Born series, I wanted to give a sense of what it would be like to live in a world that worked exactly as the Bardic Tradition described. Also I am very inspired by the ancient Hindu religion and cultural traditions. Gerald Gardner brought an much of this into Wicca. The Hindu religion is full of powerful goddess who fight to protect their people. I brought this into my story as well. For those of you who buy and read my books, thank you so very much. Please be sure to review it on Amazon so that I know what you thought of it. Reader feed back is so important and helpful. Blessed be!
