Zen and the Art of Positive Paganism|
Pagan Portals: Western Animism
Author: Melusine Draco
Publisher: Moon Books
Category: Mind Body & Spirit Level: All
‘Melusine Draco's book takes us back to basics: it explains clearly the fundamentals of Zen and how Zen "Ki" can also be identified with Old Craft "Witch-power". As an old crafter I found the comparison fascinating and also useful. This book has broadened my approach to Craft and has given ideas to try in practice.’
Julie Dexter, Dame of Coven of the Scales
‘I can’t think of another writer today who is more unusual or more inspired than Melusine Draco. I had assumed that, by now, books on Zen were using their one-handed clapping to flog dead horses along roads to nowhere. Yet her take on Zen is completely unexpected and totally original. I don’t think she has ever failed to surprise and often startle me in her previous books. This one is no different …’
Alan Richardson – esoteric author
‘Excellent book on Zen, very readable and engaging. Melusine Draco's father was a martial arts instructor so she grew up with this ancient form of animism-shamanism, and she’s well able to relate it across to other traditions. We all come from the same human and spirit roots! This is going to be one of my “go to” books, every time I need a bit of inspiration and to reconnect across the traditions of our Earth.’
Elen Sentier – shaman, author and storyteller
Animism, of course, is derived from the Latin word anima meaning breath or soul. The belief is probably one of man’s oldest, with its origin most likely dating to the Palaeolithic age if those wondrous cave paintings are anything to go by, because from its earliest beginnings it is obvious it was a belief that a soul or spirit existed in every object, even if it was inanimate. Was that why the tribal shaman retreated into the darkness of the caves, perhaps with some notion of drawing power out of the cave walls themselves? The term ‘animism’ was first popularised by Sir Edward Burnett in his work Primitive Culture (1871) and dismissed as being just that – primitive belief. While none of the world’s monotheist religions are animistic (though they may introduce modern animistic elements to cultivate the support of the environmentalists) , most other religions – e.g., those of tribal/pagan peoples – are.
Author's Notes: Mélusine Draco is an Initiate of traditional British Old Craft and the Khemetic Mysteries. Her highly individualistic teaching methods and writing draw on historical sources supported by academic texts and current archaeological findings; endorsing Crowley’s view that magic (k) is an amalgam of science and art, and that magic is the outer route to the inner Mysteries. Author of over fifty titles, many currently published with John Hunt Publishing including the best-selling six-part Traditional Witchcraft series; Power of the Elements, By Spellbook & Candle; The Dictionary of Magic & Mystery published by Moon Books; Magic Crystals Sacred Stones and The Atum-Re Revival published by Axis Mundi Books. Her esoteric novels in the Temple House Archive series are available in both paperback and e-book formats – all books are available on Amazon.
