Old English Runes for Divination & Magic |
Author: Snavely, Anton [a Witchvox Sponsor]
Publisher: Independently published
Category: Spirituality, Divination Level: All
This magical handbook is an introduction to Old English/Norse runes and a starting guide to using them for divination & other magics.
Begun in 2002, our concept started with the actual Old English Rune Poem—dating from 8th century CE. Working from translations into modern English, one rune at a time, drawing on decades of historical study and medieval re-creation, I assumed the mantle of a skald—who were the bards of the North—and created 24 new verses in modern English to provide readers an inspiration for comprehending each rune in its turn. The prose discussion outlines the meaning of each rune as it relates to its native northern culture, then how to interpret it in a reading. Thumbnail references to Wiccan concepts (not Heathen, or Asatruar) include elemental attributions.
About the co-author: K.C. Anton (1963–2011) was my Wiccan study-buddy, magical working partner, high priest, & life partner, during which time we collaborated on several witchy & magical technology workbooks. In 2002, K.C. planned a literally pocket-sized series of workbooks for publication. Life intervened, then K.C. died late in 2011, some years after his pagan shop Woodhart: Ways of Olde closed down. The publications planned never came about.
A dozen years later, I unearthed drafts of those planned workbooks from computer back-ups, and have now begun to complete and publish them. This book was closest to publication-ready; I publish it now from One Witch’s Cottage.
Author's Notes: I list this book for all levels of occult users—not because the authors' understanding of the runes themselves are so deep, but because their comprehension of Norse and Anglo-Saxon social structures and customs provide them understanding of the translated verses of the Old English Rune Poem.
Deborah's decade-long studies of the runes resulted in her decision to study the translation of original verses and create skaldic verse using modern poetic English as a means of deepening her comprehension. K.C. was inspired by those verses to create this Pocket Witch title.
