Pagans and the Law
Author: Dana D. Eilers
Publisher: New Page Books
Category: Paganism, History and Law Level: All
“I got fired because I am Pagan!”
“I am being evicted because I am Pagan!”
“They are threatening to take my kids away from me because I am Pagan!”
“My husband is using my spirituality against me in our divorce!”
Unfortunately, the above statements are all too common scenarios in the Pagan community. People find themselves in legal situations which they know little about and over which they become, justifiably, frightened. Where does one turn when they are confronted with these kinds of legal issues? Legal counsel is available, but are they going to be able to help?
Dana D. Eilers offers you information that you can use to understand the law for yourself and educate your legal counsel about the issues at hand. A 1981 cum laude graduate of New England School of Law with a history of private civil practice for 17 years in the states of Missouri and Illinois, Dana has written an informative and educational resource book to help Pagans understand the law and how it works.
Pagans and the Law begins by presenting a historical perspective on religion and government so that the modern Pagan can truly appreciate the unique moment in history in which we live: a moment when the worship of deity and adherence to an individual spiritual calling is protected by the law. Dana then goes into the workings of the American court system – giving you information about how it works, which courts you will have to deal with in regards to your specific case, and hints about finding and working with attorneys. After that the book presents different legal issues and discusses relevant information that you can provide to your attorney. It touches upon constitutional law, employment discrimination, family law, land use, landlord/tenant issues, and other areas of the law that are of interest to Pagans.
Every Pagan needs to have some realistic idea of what to do and how to conduct one’s self when faced with a legal challenge. If you ever find yourself in a situation where your rights are being compromised, educate yourself with this book, and bring a copy of it when you visit the lawyer’s office.
Author's Notes: Dana D. Eilers is the author of The Practical Pagan (New Page Books). She is a practicing Witch and Pagan Civil Rights advocate who has worked both in a coven and as a solitary for more than 10 years.
