Environmental Spirituality and its Activist Dimension

Dangerous Religion

Author: Brendan Myers

Publisher: Earth Religions Press / Dubsar House

Category: Celtic Paganism, Politics, Environment,   Level: Intermediate

Dangerous Religion" is a "thought-opera" of spiritual contemplations on Neo-Pagan and environ-mental themes. It was also written to be a manual for environmental activists and other participants in the anti-globalization movement.

The book describes a planetary Will to Life expressed by everything in nature from animals and plants to the material elements. This concept of "Global Animism" requires radical transformations in our total lives, from the level of personal belief all the way to political and economic organization.

Three main sections distinguish particular themes. The first is called "In the beginning was the Mother" and is primarily concerned with environmental and religious matters, particularly in the Celtic world view. The second section, called "Separating Reality from Illusion" examines social and political matters, especially how the global market is a manifestation of the Will to Life in pathological disorder. The third and final section, "The Great Silence", brings the previous themes into a personal and more purely spiritual unity. It suggests some ways how the disordered Will to Life may be rectified and how we must act to do it.

Some Endorsements:

"In Dangerous Religions, the subject of Neo-paganism final grows up and faces the world of politics and environmentalism with maturity. Intellectually stimulating and challenging, this book weaves the worlds of nature religion, philosophy, spirituality, ecology and protest into one work, showing that the Neo-Pagan Movement must now take its place in shaping the future of the world we live in. Myers' work is a must for those who question the purpose of the pagan movement in a modern world." Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone

"Brendan "Cathbad" Myers is a dangerous man. Not only can he think clearly and creatively about some of the most important issues of our time, but he argues passionately and poetically about the need to challenge the dominant paradigms that rule our world-religious tyranny, corporate plundering, and financial mismanagement of our
dwindling resources... "Dangerous Religions" are ones that make you question authority, think for yourself, feel for other creatures, and demand justice. Earth Religions Press is proud to present a spiritual work that belongs on the bookshelves of every Neopagan on earth." Isaac Bonewits

Author's Notes: This is my first book, and I am very proud of it. It took three years to write, and three years to find the right publisher, but in the end it was well worth it.

A "thought-opera", by the way, is a book of mainly prose writing mixed with several kinds of writing styles, including poetry, which explores an idea, or a group of related ideas, from a variety of directions.

My comments concerning the philosophical foundations of Paganism, the true nature of the environmental crisis, and the global market, are sure to be controversial. Yet my suggestions for alternative thought and action should surely be welcomed. I am already well underway writing the sequel!
