Pagan Bazaar

by Ciddragon Sunseeker

For the 2nd year in a row, the Pagan Bazaar was held in Apple Valley, California, in the High Desert area of Southern California’s San Bernardino County, on Sunday, the 3rd of April. The event was sponsored by the Victor Valley PAGAN Discussion Group and was hosted on in acreage at the private residence of one of the Discussion Group’s members. This Bazaar is held annually to provide [1] a springtime festival for the local Pagan community, [2] a opportunity for that Pagan community to obtain information, services & merchandise from a large variety of friendly vendors, and [3] to reach out to the rest of the people in the Victor Valley area, letting them know a little more about our own community.
As expected, the Bazaar was larger than last year’s event in every way. By the time of the opening at 10:00am, some 48 vendors—from around Southern California and as far away as Las Vegas—were set up and eager. There were at least 401 people attending the festival, a number that was easily tallied since each person coming in the only walk through entrance was given a free raffle ticket. And those attending brought with them a total of 384 pounds of canned food, which was donated to and gratefully accepted by Samaritan’s Helping Hand food bank in Victorville. With the exception of some strong gusting winds later in the day, the event went smoothly.
The atmosphere at the Bazaar was intoxicating and the energy from the crowd was highly visible. Some of those attending the event participated to the fullest extent, wearing ritual attire, or Pagan clothing or RenFaire costume. About an hour after the Bazaar opened its gates, there was as Wiccan Opening Ritual that was given by Five Points Circle Coven, and there were a number of non-coven-members who participated.
An instrumental and singing group from Orange County, The Clover Fields—which had previously appeared in public only a few times—played and sang their way through two sets of primarily Celtic-influenced folk music during the day and were well received. There were a number of other firsts for this year’s Bazaar, including a meditational stone circle, a labyrinth, three rituals instead of just the one opening ritual, a food vendor, a demonstration of shamanic drumming by drum vendors Lizzie Drums & Heartbeat of the Goddess, as well as one on playing the singing crystal bowls by Elivia Melodey of Crystal Vibrations Music.
One of the vendors—Stone Garden Sculptures—set up a 14-foot diameter stone circle for personal meditation, and when it came time for the second ritual to be conducted, the Druid Order of the Sacred Grove from Las Vegas, Nevada, used the stone circle for part of their ritual.
Adjacent to the vendors’ area, but definitely separated from it, a labyrinth was set up by Enchanted Crystal from Running Springs, California, and during the day over 50 individuals took a guided meditational walk through it.
The third ritual was coordinated by a local coven, Gryffin’s Oasis of Victorville. Their Aura Car Wash was a fun, energetic cleansing of auras as a number of people walked through the ‘car wash.’
Next year’s event is already in the planning stages, and the sponsors are looking for an indoor location large enough to accommodate several entertainment areas separate from an area for workshops & lectures, and perhaps areas not only for children’s activities but also for a pagan art show. And when one couples all of that with an area big enough to accommodate at least 55 vendors, perhaps Pagan Bazaar 2006 will be really outstanding.
Blessings,
