Website Profile: Magical jewelery and stained glass art. My work is drawn from the landscape around my home, in the far West of Cornwall, where the ancient wild moor land is peppered with sacred sites, hut circles and old mine workings – powerful places to charge one’s creative energies.
I am inspired by a vivid awareness of the sea, which surrounds Penwith almost as an island, the turning seasons and our mineral-rich land where man has mined metals for millennia. Along with images and ideas from traditional Celtic stories, and my own pagan spirituality, these inspirations feed the designs of my jewellery and glasswork. I like to work with archetypal symbols like the moon and the hare, and have recently become very interested in Ogham, the ancient tree alphabet system.
All of my jewellery is hand fabricated using silver, gold, (sometimes a little copper) and semi-precious gemstones. I choose not to use precious stones as too many people lose their lives, and too much environmental destruction occurs in their production.
I use traditional silversmithing techniques of hand fabrication to form each piece, as craftsmen have done for hundreds of years. Not only do I enjoy the challenge of hand fabrication, but also feel the satisfaction of knowing that each of my pieces is truly unique. I do sometimes apply commercially made findings or chains.
My glasswork is all made using the Tiffany technique. I do not paint on glass or use stick-on lead, as I do not feel that this lasts the test of time. I coat the edges of glass pieces thickly with lead to ensure durability and strength.
