Southern Fried Witch

Category: Blogs

Website Profile: Welcome to the barbaric musings of a Southern Craftswoman! Herein I have found a cyberspace for inscribing my journey through my croning years, my teaching notes and the occasional witchy rant. As a Celt/Cherokee kitchen witch, I also carve a place for the magic of food and the indelible notion that its creation and manifestation carries with it love, memories, history and healing. If you have arrived here, you share my affection for eclectic magic, the heartbeat of a Southern soul, and the sheer nirvana of nourishing the members of your tribe.

I am a native Alabamian, a teacher, a momma and a Celt/Cherokee High Priestess. I resist neater labels (such as Deborean) only in an effort to avoid aligning my spirituality to any specific clan or coven, but certainly not in disregard of them. As such, I enjoy and teach respect to all other faiths, both Pagan and otherwise, and teach my craft students the same. My formal teaching has only just begun, from the initiate stages of early magic, although I have been teaching English Literature for twelve years in a local university system. As Seba, I rely upon my magic name for craft writing, thereby nodding to a clear line between what I am paid to do and what I live to do.

I hold a Doctorate of Philosophy and have published several articles on feminism and goddess theology. As a remarried mother of three, mostly grown children, I spent much of my years in academia searching for the connection between the maternal goddess, my doctoral work and my spirituality. Only recently have I crossed over into writings upon the craft, which was inspired by a rigorous interrogation of my own growth as a priestess.

As a hereditary craftswoman, I hold firm that bloodlines are not exclusionary in a distinct Clan mentality born of both Celtic and Cherokee ancestory. An “adopted” initiate, therefore, is indeed family. My own beginnings were nourished by a Pagan African-American mother figure who made no discernment between bloodlines and soul-lines. I am, therefore, a solitary craftswoman who attends to familial students and celebrates my craft as a ripple in the tapestry of all Paganism. Without reservation, I affirm, rather than resist, my roots in the South and find them to be a sustaining factor in my path.

But that’s just the beginning. Because my path is private (i.e. I don’t hand it out like candy, teach online or publish how to seminars) I have, occasionally, come under fire as suspect. I also hold to a fast and dirty two strikes, you’re out rule–unless you have broken something sacred, in which case the bat falls for good the first time. My bad. Life’s too short for mold on the cheese. Now, this little force of nature within me has not eclipsed long, sturdy friendships with likeminded folks and for that, I am blessed. I have been accused of being “The Good Witch” and take it as a compliment. Without reservation, I attempt to do no harm–unless harm has been enacted upon my kin. Then, well. I’m Southern. A witch. A teacher. Extraordinarily native in a modern world. A momma. And . . .
