Website Profile: The Society for Ecological Sky Burial (SESB) , which to date exists only as a Yahoo group, is an environmental organization devoted to studying ecological alternatives to conventional burial and cremation--especially sky burial, which refers to the exposure of the dead to the sky and its creatures.
In ages past, it was common among Pagan peoples to place their dead on elevated surfaces--such as towers or scaffolds--and give the bodies to scavengers, especially birds. Today sky burial is still practiced by Zoroastrians, Tibetan Buddhists, and some other cultural and religious groups. SESB is working to find properties and Nature preserves in the United States where this ancient practice can be done.
