Pagan History [A Witchvox Sponsor]

Category: Historical

Website Profile: The Pagan History website at egregores.org explores the deep connections between contemporary Paganism and ancient Paganism. Paganism IS the Old Religion. The site is polemical, but factual. A wide variety of contemporary reliable scholarly sources are cited throughout. Without relying on either unprovable speculation or bogus "scholarship", all Pagans can proudly proclaim to be the followers of an ancient Path.
Among the many modern myths of Paganism that are laid to rest are the following: (1) Paganism is a "European" religion. (2) Pagans did not fight to preserve their religion in the face of persecution, and there is no reason to believe that any kind of clandestine Paganism could have survived to the present. (3) The great philosophers of the ancient world aren't a reliable source of knowledge about ancient Paganism. (4) Pan as a Great God is a figment of the modern imagination. (5) The worship of a Great Goddess was invented by feminists in California in the 1970's. (6) Roman Pagans were evil and violent and it's a good thing that their religions were supressed by the Christians. (7) The "triumph" of Christianity over Paganism was an inevitable result of the inherent strengths of Christianity and the inherent weaknesses of Paganism. (8) One cannot criticize Christianity without being "intolerant." (9) The great mages of the Renaissance, Like Marsilio Ficino and Cornelius Agrippa were Christians.
