Website Profile: The Maiden Persephone is the sweetest, most unassuming of the Goddesses of Olympus. Hades, Master of the Dead, seldom sees such innocence in his dark Underworld realm -- and falls hard for her, despite the fact that she apparently has no magickal talent. God meets Goddess, and Hades' kingly courtesy and mysterious intensity prove irresistible to Persephone. But, upon arriving in the Underworld, she is horrified to discover that Hades rules his Spectral subjects with an iron hand . . . and a leather whip. He keeps tied up so she cannot "take the easy way out." When Demeter, Persephone's mother discovers the real reason why Zeus won't fly to the rescue, Demeter wreaks a terrible vengeance. What happens next is unprecedented in either the worlds of Gods or Men . . .
This classic seasonal allegory becomes, in its modern retelling, a coming-of-age tale of being tested to find out what you are really made of . . . and a steamy story of love and sexual awakening. Composed by Peabody Conservatory graduate Rosanna Tufts, "The Passion of Persephone" is both a throwback to the early days of Baroque opera, and contemporarily edgy with its BDSM twist.
Although it is possible to perform selections from the show in an unstaged concert version, this is intended to ultimately break out of the coffeehouse mold, to become a fully-staged theatrical production.
