The Gypsy Nomads/Scott Helland
[A Witchvox Sponsor]

Category: Musicians

Website Profile: "The amount of sound and energy this duo puts out is awesome... " Taconic Press Times

New York duo, The Gypsy Nomads (aka Frenchy and the Punk!) , channel the spirit of the gypsy sound, lacing it with a cabaret, celtic and neo-medieval flavor rooted in punk, folk and the vineyards of southern France. The duo features bilingual French-born British chanteuse Samantha Stephenson on vocals, percussion and drums and songwriter and veteran of the punk scene Scott Helland on guitar, drums, and guitar loops. Together Samantha and Scott create a compelling onstage chemistry and their music is a lively and animated tribute to the free spirit lifestyle and their flair for the theatrical makes them hypnotic to watch.

Dynamic and unpredictable, the Nomads take the audience on a spirited ride through an array of styles from sultry and cheeky French/English songs to gypsy celtic inspired instrumentals to pounding drums reminiscent of Taiko and march-style choreography. Samantha's Siouxsie-esque vocals perfectly complement Helland's guitar lines, which he layers with live looping. Their fans keep coming back for their high octane performance and underground hits like Ogre Dance, Oh Gypsy, Caravan and Blacksmith which are all available on their three most recent CDs. The end of 2009 sees the Nomads returning to the recording studio for their next release.

Their music has been licensed for Indie films and TV including the Oprah Winfrey show and WE TV's Gothic Wedding show. They have been featured performers at PA's Spoutwood Faerie Festival, NYC's lower east side burlesque club The Slipper Room, the cabaret stage at Philadelphia's Trocadero Theater, NY's Brushwood Center, St Louis' Focal Point Folk Theater, and INATS Trade Show in Florida and Colorado.

Attracting Rock, Celtic, Folk and Gothic music lovers alike, their CD recordings, most recently At The Carnival Eclectique (2008) , Eternal Summer (2008) , Thread & Stone (2007) , Catapult (2006) , Brocade (2004) , Earthbound (2002) , and Space Age Tranceology (2000) reflect the diversity of their fan base. Lifelong devotees of all things mystical, earthy and magickal, and honoring the balance of dark and light they both follow an eclectic path. Fiercely independent, they epitomize the spirit of creativity and the commitment to individuality.

Faerie Mag 2008 "I no sooner played the first track of Eternal Summer before I wanted to play it again. I don't jest when I write that there is an addictive quality to some of these tunes, and that I have listened to this album again and again!"

New Witch Magazine 2008 "Few bands have grabbed my attention like The Gypsy Nomads..." (Raven Digitalis - Winter issue 16)

Faerie Magazine 2007 says (about the new Catapult CD) "...Helland captures a mood that evokes a bonfire on a dark night, undulating and pulsating with life..."

A review of his 2004 CD in Chronogram Magazine in Sept. 2004 says: "Scott Helland's Brocade is a triumph of the artist's "keep it simple and honest" punk-rock roots invigorated by a decidedly non-punk array of musical styles...as he gives his inspired take on American folk rock, medieval, Goth, and pop.....Helland displays wit, taste, vision, and craftsmanship in memorable melodies and colorfully constructed arrangements."

PagaNet News May 2005 says, "Scott creates a warm brew of magic in which any audiophile will want to submerge...he manages to breath delicate power into his 'neoclassical' style..."

All CDs are available through his website, other online music stores, live shows and pagan/new age stores. (Retailers, Catapult is now available through New Leaf Distributing Company.)

The Gypsy Nomads perform year round across the US and have shared festival stages with Candice Night of Blackmore’s Night, Canada's Dragon Ritual Drummers, drum and bagpipe band Albannach, Scotland’s Clann an Drumma, Atlanta's Emerald Rose, New York’s Voltaire, Maryland's Ego Likeness and many more cool artists!
