Sinnsreachd Life...Musings of a Druid Farmer King

Category: Blogs

Website Profile: The main purpose of this blog is to put a more public face on Sinnsreachd. Our religion is small compared with similar ones and the main places to interact with us are on social media pages. These are nice, but these pages don’t get much attention on the search engines and people actually have to sign up for both the site and the page to talk to us. Too much work! With a blog I can share what we are about in a very public venue and people can easily ask questions or make comments without having to commit to membership on a social media site.
The title of the blog is Sinnsreachd Life, so many of the posts will be meant to convey what it is actually like to be a Sinsearaí, at least from my own perspective. However, the posts here are likely to cover a lot of ground. Sometimes I will talk about the garden, sometimes the kids, sometimes I may wax poetic, sometimes I will explore deep metaphysical or philosophical topics. Often I will just prattle on about Sinnsreachd. My goal is to post at least once a week.
Sinnsreachd? What’s that?
Sinnsreachd is a modern pagan religion-culture. We follow a reconstruction and adaptation of the pre-Christian religions of the Gael, that is Ireland, Scotland and Isle of Man. Sinnsreachd is a tribal religion. This means that while we have members practicing alone by circumstance, the base unit is really the family/household. We are polytheistic, meaning that we worship the gods as individuals. We are hierarchical which means that we have a formal rank structure. Our groups are called households (teaghlaigh) , clans (clanna) , and tribes (túatha) depending on size. Leadership is generally shared between the administrative (Rí or Taoiseach) and religious (Druí) . Although in practice these roles often merge and overlap, and the details vary from tribe to tribe.
So, who are you?
I am Dáire Hobbs; I am lots of things. Father of 9.5 (10 is due in early December) , Army veteran of nearly ten years, druid (Druí) , chieftain (Taoiseach) , avid gardener, telecom worker, wannabe author and Sinsearaí. I have been pagan of one stripe or other since 1996 and Sinnsreachd since about 2005. The journey from Eclectic Wicca to Sinnsreachd is really too long to share here, but I’m sure it will come out in the blog. The gist of it was that as my family grew, so did my need for tradition and solidity in my spirituality.
Druid Farmer King?
My moniker of Druid Farmer King is my way of poking fun at some of the many hats I wear in my family and tribe. Druid and King are fairly self explanatory. I am the religious leader for my tribe. I lead the rituals and generally try to keep us on the good side of the gods. I am also the administrative leader of the family and tribe. Although, I must give praise here to my wife for her guidance and encouragement when I find myself beating my head against a wall. (Remember, behind every good man is a good woman…laughing at him.) Farmer is in my blood. As far back as I can confidently go so far (about 10 generations) , my ancestors have mostly been farmers. To that end we have a fairly large garden and are slowly turning our semi-rural half-acre into a mini-homestead.
