Dark Goddesses: Journey into Divine Shadows

Website Profile: The Lotus Academy of Spiritual Arts Presents...

THE DARK GODDESSES: A JOURNEY INTO DIVINE SHADOWS

Explore the destructive, chaotic, often frightening, and frequently misunderstood aspect of Divine Femininity - The Dark Goddess. Come to meet and hear the tales that make up the mythology surrounding the world's various Goddesses of Death, Destruction, Rage, War, Chaos, often Rulers the Underworlds - or personifications of the Void itself. Learn how the powers that Terrified were the very powers that brought about Transformation, Rebirth, Order, Change, Healing, Peace, Knowledge, Wisdom, and Creation.

Some of the Dark Goddesses that we will discuss over the course of this class include India's Kali, Scotland's Cailleach and Scathach, Ireland's Morrigan, Sumeria's Ereshkigal, Judaism's Lilith, Egypt's Sekhmet, Greece's Hecate, Africa's Oya, Russia's Baba Yaga, the Norse Hel and many others.

In this 3-month intensive course, varying academic views of the pervasive Dark Goddess archetype in mythology will also be presented, including Jungian Psychoanalytical and Feminist interpritations, alongside modern Neo-Pagan perspectives and testimonials. Discover how opening yourself to the trials inherant in the energies of Dark Goddesses can help you confront your Shadows and achieve a more balanced spiritual whole.

Students will be asked to journal critical examinations of and personally reflect on lesson material, as well as write a final paper.

The course facilitator, Devi, currently works the Dark Goddess Kali, and along with her studies in world mythology, was also formally educated in the psychology of religion as part of her Religious Studies BA program.

The course fee is $40 USD, is payable by PayPal and includes a certificate of completion for those who successfully finish.

Course Level: Intermediate - Advanced

Course Requirements: 6-8 hours / lesson (78-104 hrs total)

** Students must be prepared to complete 1 lesson / week to keep pace **

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Introduction to the Dark Goddesses

In this lesson the student is presented with several articles from various academic and spiritual perspectives on the Dark Goddesses and the archetype of the Dark Feminine. This will set the overall tone for the remainder of the course and give the student an idea of the intellectual level of material that will make up the bulk of the readings.

Lesson 2: Further Perspectives on the Dark Goddesses

This lesson introduces some of the more "fringe" perspectives on the Dark Goddess, including that of the archetype being a manifestation of an astro-physical phenomenon, exploring Hell-like near death experiences as a opportunuty for change, as well as reclaiming alternative sexuality as an aspect of Dark Goddess work.

Lesson 3: Scotland's Dark Goddesses - Scathach & Cailleach

Our trip around the world to find and meet Dark Goddesses begins here with two Crone-type figures. The Scathach plays in integral role in the myths of Cu Cullain, and the Cailleach appears in many folktales.

Lesson 4: Wales & Ireland - Cerridwen & the Morrigan

Many are surprised to find Cerridwen listed as a Dark Goddess, but in this lesson the "why" of this is explored. The spiritual role that the Death & War Goddess (es) , the Morrigan, plays is also presented.

Lesson 5: Judaic - Lilith

Lilith was originally a demoness, but many are now finding widsom and knowledge in Her myths. How can a man-raping, baby-killing demon be considered a positive spiritual Goddess of Self-Respect and Personal-Strength? Learn all about Her and those who choose to follow Her in this lesson.

Lesson 6: Greece Part 1 - Hecate & Persephone

The triple-formed Goddess of Magick and Crossroads, Hecate, is presented and probably comes as no surprise that She is listed as a Dark Goddess. Virginal Persephone, may raise eyebrows, however. How is this young girl, kidnapped and tricked into being Queen of the Underworld a Dark Goddess? Learn all about Her role as a psychopomp and more in this lesson.

Lesson 7: Greece Part 2 - Nyx & Medusa

We all learned about monster Medusa in high-school mythology, but they never taught us that She developed from a Snake-Goddess of a nearby civilization. Learn how the demonization of Medusa and what She came to really stand for makes Her a figure worthy of deeper study. And Nyx was once considered so powerful that even Zeus feared Her, so what happened to this Goddess of the Void? Learn Her story and the wisdom She holds for modern seekers.

Lesson 8: India - Kali

The infamous Kali is explored in detail. She embodies so many of the aspects of the Dark Goddess archetype, that some scholars spend their lives linking Her to nearly every other Dark Goddess around the world. Learn why this Goddess of Death, Decay, Destruction, Chaos, Madness, Broken-Taboos and Rage holds so much sway over our group mind.

Lesson 9: Egypt - Sekhmet, Neith & Naunet

Meet the ancient Egyptian Goddesses of Rage, of War and of the Void. They have much in common with our other Heroines, and reinforce many of the same lessons. Discover how the wisdom of the ages travelled around the world to all cultures, and ponder why we shun and repress it now.

Lesson 10: Mesopotamea - Tiamat, Ereshkigal & Anat

Tiamat is most famous for being slain by Her son, Marduk in the Sumerian creation epic. What would turn a son against His Mother, and how did Her corpse - representative of the Watery Chaotic Void - become the foundation of material creation? Inanna is remembered for Her beauty and Her fertility, but it is Her decent into the Underworld realm of Her twin sister Ereshkigal that is most stirring. Learn the knowledge behind the symbolism of this tale. And finally, Anat was reknowned in the ancient world for Her abilites as a ruthless war Goddess but also for Her beauty and gentleness. Explore this strange paradox.

Lesson 11: African & Afro-Carribean - Oya, Maman Brigit & Erzulie Dantor

Oya, African Goddess of Violent and Destructive Storms, feared for Her quick and often deadly justice, is often referred to as the African Kali. Is this a fair assesment? Meet two Goddesses of Santeria and VouDou, each of which is moody and far too familiar with Death. One guides and gaurds the ancestors in the Underworld, and the other protects women in crisis. Learn what draws people to worship at Their dangerous altars.

Lesson 12: MesoAmerican - Tlazolteotl, Mictecacihuatl and La Santisma Muerte

The Lady of the Dead, The Filth-Eating Birth Goddess and Saint Death all hail from the Americas. Learn the link between the skeletal version of the Virgin Mary, and the ancient Lady Death, and about the growing cult to Her that has the Church up in arms. These figures also have strong ties to the internationally famous festival La Dia de los Muertos. Then meet a strangely beautiful Goddess, a promiscuous matron of prostitutes and oddly, birth, who redeems mankind by eating spiritual refuse.

Lesson 13: Gnostic - Black Madonnas and Mary Magdalene

The DaVinci Code has brought them back into the mainstream's popular consciousness, but what historical message do They have for us? What is Their metaphysical significance? Who are They really? Black Madonna's are theorized to be ancient Pagan Goddesses re-dressed as the Virgin Mary, or figures of Mary Magdalene. Is any of this true? Explore this intriguing topic in this lesson.

Lesson 14: Personal Shadow Work

Now that the student has explored the true nature of Dark Goddesses and the archetype of the Dark Feminine, and has a full understanding of the healing that embracing Divine Darkness can bring, they are presented with many different meditations and exercizes that they may choose to experiment with in their personal lives. All the material in this lesson focuses on identifying, facing and hopefully integrating Dark parts of one's self in order to facilitate healing and individuation.
