 The Story...
When I was 20 a lover and I asked for a sign to help us decide whether to move in together. As we were leaving my house to go out for dinner, we stepped outside to be confronted with our first veiw of the northern lights, the aurora borealis. We took it as a sign to move in and of course she dumped me a few months later - so we learned about interpreting the signs we are given. The song is kind of inspired by that, but mostly talks about doing something with your life before we get old. "If you wanna see the Northern Lights, you gotta lift up your head and, if you wanna have some kind of life decide you're not better off dead and, if you wanna read the mystic story written in your future, you better start to write it now...."
Recorded: Audio Logic
Guests/Players: Christopher Bingham and Sue Tinney; vocals, Dan Mohler; bass, Dan Ochipinti; drums, Betsy Tinney; cello, Jay Kenney; hammond B-3, Heather Alexander; bodhran

Secret of the Crossroads Devil
(words & music by Christopher Bingham)
Secret of the Crossroads DevilI have seen the Northern LightsLooked out my window at just the right timeI'd been waiting for a signWhen green and golden, they filled the night skyNow this vision it was mineBut which direction, so much to ponderI would take a little timeI've waited this long, why not longer? And the nights are getting colderDoes this touch of grey really mean I'm getting this much olderCoyote's getting bolder, laughing right outside the doorBut if you want to see the Northern LightsYou gotta lift up your head and If you wanna have some kind of lifeDecide you're not better off dead and If you want to read the mystic story written in your futureYou better start to write it now...Who can tell the truth from lies? What's a life without examination?I would take a little timeI've waited this long, why not longer? And the nights are getting colderAnd yeah this touch of grey really means I'm getting this much olderCoyote's getting bolder, stealing stuff right out the doorBut if you want to see the Northern LightsYou gotta lift up your head and If you wanna have some kind of lifeDecide you're not better off dead and If you want to read the mystic story written in your futureYou better start to write it now...I met the devil in afieldI said "Oh finally! Did you bring my contract?"And the secret he revealedWas that he waits for no one, and he's never made a single dealMeanwhile the nights have gotten coldYeah that shock of grey means man you're really getting oldCoyote's gotten bold, you know he's sleeping on your floorBut if you want to see the Northern LightsYou gotta lift up your head and If you wanna have some kind of lifeDecide you're not better off dead and If you want to read the secret story written in your futureYou better start to write it now...October 29, 1998
