Bardic Circle Featuring Anne Hill...

Circle Round
(by Anne Hill)

Audience Count: 13,355

The Story...

Writing this song was actually an initiation challenge for me. I was asked to write a magical song for children, and came up with the first verse and chorus right away. Those two pieces of the song call in the quarters and cast a circle, which was my intention. It took me a bit longer to figure out what I wanted to say in the middle of the song. I settled on a prayer for peace and happiness in the second verse, and a bit of gratitude for all that we have in the third verse. Even adult audiences know what to do when we get to the chorus!

This song has travelled a long way already, to festivals, classrooms, concert halls, parks, and two magazines. Starhawk and Diane Baker and I used it as the title for our book on raising children in Goddess traditions, and it is also the title track of the CD of magical children's songs I put out in April. But I think the best feedback I've gotten on the song is from my younger daughter's old teacher. I had played it in his 1st grade classroom last school year, and this year he told me he's using "Circle Round" as the theme for his class for the entire year! And he's not even Pagan!

So I am heartened that earth-honoring, joyful music continues to find fertile ground in our homes, schools, churches, and clubs--it is indeed a universal message.

Recorded: Winter Solstice 1999, Transformations Studio

Guests/Players: Anne Hill, lead vocal and guitar; Wiley Woods, mandolin; Brook Schoenfield, lead guitar, Lyra Hill (my daughter), backing vocals

Technical Notes: guitar, mandolin, vocals, and an all-digital studio!

Artist Profile: The Circle Round website is our resource section for Pagan parents, and for anyone wanting to bring earth-based spirituality into their family life. We have an extensive listing of resources for each season and festival, moon cycle and phase of life, as well as outtake articles from our book, _Circle Round: Raising Children in Goddess Traditions._ This site is maintained by author Anne Hill, with help from Starhawk and Diane Baker. Be welcome!

Circle Round
(words & music by Anne Hill)

Circle round the sunrise, circle round the breeze,
Circle round the flame inside us dancing free,
Circle round the oceans, the waters of our birth,
Circle round the stars at night and circle round the earth! Oh,

Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground.

Circle round for freedom, all across the world,
Circle round for happiness for every boy and girl,
Circle round for love from our head down to our toe,
Circle round to spread it out wherever it may go!

We dance upon the earth as it circles round the sun,
This planet we call home is such a special one,
And so we give our thanks for what this day may bring,
Giving us another chance to Circle Round and Sing! Oh,

Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground,
Circle Round, circle round, reach for the sky, stomp on the ground!
