Bardic Circle Featuring Zorah Staar...

We are growing
(by Zorah Staar)

Audience Count: 13,049

The Story...

I've heard it said that when we are children, our parents are like Goddess and God to us - our whole universe, our everything. When I was a child, my father was both a god of nightmares and a god of music. When he wasn't busy hurting, he'd be busy playing fast and free on a beautiful, golden, Gibson hollow-bodied electric guitar. And there was this guitar riff he'd play over and over, sort of like a wild trumpet call of power and delight.

And so I always wanted to play guitar like that. I always wanted that sense of power and delight, and the freedom and courage to express it to the world. When I was well along my own particular pagan healing path, and also well into creating the music I call "pagan pop," it came to me that it was time to write a song for my father and myself. It would be a song to burn away all that needed to go in my relationship with him, a song to honour both our painful journey and the journey of all women and men, as we try so hard to grow, to "stumble free of our grief and confusion" into places of love and light.

So I took that old guitar riff of my father's, and I wove into it my own shining new melody, plus the flaming-true energy of Apollo, the flowing-clear-through energy of the Celtic/Frisian Goddess Nehalennia, and a touch of wind and earth besides. And what came out was the song "We are growing."

Recorded: Nomad Music, Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada

Guests/Players: "We are growing" is a song which epitomizes the "pagan pop" I create and perform, also described as "radically-uplifting New Age music that rocks, bops and boogies you across the dance floor." The song grew rapidly from a simple guitar riff and my own contributions on lead vocal and acoustic guitar into the extravaganza of pagan boogie fever it is today, thanks to some wailing electric guitar and booming bass from the amazing Adrian Shamberger, and the funky disco/rock drumming of gifted percussionist John Hildebrand.

Technical Notes: "We are growing" was recorded wild and free to a TASCAM digital tape recorder. First we laid down electric bass guitar and full kit drumming in one take, and then overdubbed the signature electric guitar riffs and other playing, plus the lead vocal and some frenzied tamborine and zany keyboards.

Artist Profile: Zorah Staar is a songwriter, singer and musician who makes “pagan pop” or “radically uplifting pagan music that rocks, bops and boogies you across the dance floor, along with some powerfully loving ballads to catch your breath" (available at Zorah's biggest dream is to help contribute to the transformation of the world through music. Her songs blend lyrics about love, the earth, Goddess, God, and other age-old pagan themes with wild new pop, disco and Celtic rock sounds. For example, “Spiral dance” honours the beautifully swirling pattern danced by many peoples from ancient times onwards, and is an unabashedly happy blend of afro-celtic-ish rhythms with lyrics about the many magical spirals of nature and our universe. "Now I am willing" is an example of the gentler side of Zorah Staar's "pagan pop" - a peaceful piano ballad about how we seem to grow as human beings, as spirits in bodies, all in one way or another looking to find our way home. Newsflash: Zorah's looking for a new drummer and/or bass player in the B.C. Gulf Islands/Victoria/Vancouver area )email Merry meet and blessed be!

We are growing
(words & music by Zorah Staar)

Apollo burn us true
Nehalennia keep us flowing
Sky Dancer fly us through
New earth we are growing

Stumbling free of our grief and confusion
Men and women drop our warring stance
Shifting currents, many Gods and Goddesses
Different fires spark each different dance

Twisting, turning, we run from each other
Men and women making caves of fear
Loving waters flow us out of our darknesses
Loving wings come to soar us clear

All our truth we can show to each other
Men and women sharing roots and roars
Tides of healing rip through earthly darknesses
Tides of fire from our earthly cores

Apollo burn us true
Nehalennia keep us flowing
Sky Dancer fly us through
New earth we are growing...
