Bardic Circle Featuring Zorah Staar...
Spiral dance
(by Zorah Staar)

Audience Count: 6,551
 The Story...
If you're a pagan, it's a pretty safe bet that at some point spirals, and more specifically a spiral dance or two, have crossed paths with you. If you're checking out the Witchvox Bardic Circle, you probably already know this, but for newcomers, a spiral dance is a beautifully winding pattern danced by many peoples from time immemorial, and now danced by many modern pagans. As far as I've experienced, you need about 20 or more happily singing people holding hands and dancing around in a circle (not hard to find at a pagan gathering), and then one person lets go of one hand and cuts slightly inside the perimeter of the circle, leading everyone else behind them in a spiral growing to the centre, at which point the leader reverses direction and starts the spiral going back outwards, as a result of which everyone ends up having a magical opportunity to look everyone else in the face for a brief moment as they whirl by in joy and fun (or sometimes in great peace and gentleness, if that is the feeling of the gathering at that time).
To me a spiral dance and my own version of "Spiral dance" are all about love and connection with our sister and brother beings, and with all living creatures and patterns that populate our universe in ever-exquisite spirals of light and energy. They're everywhere - in the dancing evolutions of our DNA, in the gentle curves of the tiny baby ferns I see as I walk in the forest or the salty shells I gather by the sea, in the ecstatically whirling patterns of stars soaring above me on a hot summer night... Come and love who you are... come and love who we are... that's the feeling I was reaching to bring alive in this song.
Recorded: Nomad Music, Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada, 2000
Guests/Players: Zorah Staar, Adrian Schamberger, John Hildebrand
Technical Notes: "Spiral dance" started life as a relatively folky tune but then took off in a joyous afro-celtic-ish direction during rehearsals leading up to recording. This was thanks to the incredible creativity, bubbling bass, and flying electric guitar of Adrian Schamberger, and the vibrant multi-layers of drum kit and hand percussion magically created by John Hildebrand. The song was recorded with great fun to a TASCAM digital tape recorder, building up around the original acoustic guitar part played by myself (Zorah Staar), and finishing with vocals and a bit of synthesizer to sweeten the mix near the end ("Come and love who you are...").
Artist Profile: Zorah Staar is a songwriter, singer and musician who makes “pagan pop” or “radically uplifting pagan music that rocks, bops and boogies you across the dance floor, along with some powerfully loving ballads to catch your breath" (available at www.paganpopmusic.com). Zorah's biggest dream is to help contribute to the transformation of the world through music. Her songs blend lyrics about love, the earth, Goddess, God, and other age-old pagan themes with wild new pop, disco and Celtic rock sounds. For example, “Spiral dance” honours the beautifully swirling pattern danced by many peoples from ancient times onwards, and is an unabashedly happy blend of afro-celtic-ish rhythms with lyrics about the many magical spirals of nature and our universe. "Now I am willing" is an example of the gentler side of Zorah Staar's "pagan pop" - a peaceful piano ballad about how we seem to grow as human beings, as spirits in bodies, all in one way or another looking to find our way home. Newsflash: Zorah's looking for a new drummer and/or bass player in the B.C. Gulf Islands/Victoria/Vancouver area )email info@paganpopmusic.com). Merry meet and blessed be!

Spiral dance
(words & music by Zorah Staar)
Ferns filling forests Meadow beds so gorgeous Green leaf and laughing life Curled 'round itself Seashells and beaches Where the wonder reaches Sweet fruits of life in spiral-perfect shapes, oh...
SPIRAL DANCE OF LIFE AND LOVE AS BELOW, SO IS ABOVE FERN, SHELL, CELL AND STAR SPIRAL DANCE OF WHO WE ARE COME AND SEE WHO YOU ARE COME AND BE WHO YOU ARE COME AND LOVE WHO YOU ARE
In busy bodies Biologic wannabe's Mystic mambo twisting Of D and N and A Love is the frequency Living blooming harmony Turning out and turning on Tiny cells so true...
CHORUS
Nighttime sky now Hungrier to fly now Could it be the stardust Glowing in my bones? Fireflies and galaxies Circling ever so free Never-ending dance of' Round and round we go...
CHORUS
Come and love who you are Come and love...
CHORUS
Come and love who you are Come and love who you are
* pagan PC note: I believe the common phrase is "As above, so is below" but that didn't rhyme well so I chose to reverse it for the chorus!
