Bardic Circle Featuring Emerald Rose...
Santa Claus is Pagan, Too!
(by Emerald Rose)

Audience Count: 11,981
 The Story...
(from Larry) I wrote this tune about four years ago, in protest for the barrage of Jesus songs that hit us mid-November and don't let up till January. Yule's always such a strange time for Pagans, you just feel overwhelmed by the popular culture. Luckily, Santa Claus is one of those great universal icons that can appeal to everyone...and you know he'd never leave out the Pagan kids! The song had lots of verses originally, including one about Tantra under the tinsel tree, which we've pruned out for length and family-friendly listening ;) Basically, the song simply acknowledges that we Pagans are happy to share the Holly King's image with all Christians, since there's plenty of joy to go around, after all!
We're pleased to report that on the fourth day since the song's release on MP3.com, it has reached the #8 spot on the Christmas charts (pop/rock-seasonal-christmas) thanks to your downloads and e-mail to friends! We'd love for you to send an early Yule greeting with our song to anyone who needs a spot of cheer!
Recorded: Starbridge Studios, Dahlonega, GA, November 2002
Guests/Players: Us four ER guys (Logan, Larry, Arthur and Clyde) , plus a few of the Emerald Rose "extended family" on the last chorus (Cayce, Danae and Alena)
Technical Notes: This is a very simple song, guitar, jingle-bells and vocals. We've recorded through a Marshall MXL mic direct to digital, minimal processing. This is our second recording of this tune, we did a very rough version last year.
Artist Profile: Emerald Rose (Brian "Logan" Sullivan, Arthur Hinds, Larry Morris, and Clyde Gilbert) is a Pagan/Celtic Folk Rock group based in Georgia and currently touring the East Coast and beyond. Their "sound" is a blend of guitar, bass, world percussion, harmony vocals, and Irish whistle; but ER covers a lot of musical ground, from Celtic tradition to original rock ballads to zany humor. The band has three CD's: the demo release "Emerald Rose", the 2000 studio CD "Bending Tradition, " and the 2002 LIVE CD "Fire In The Head." Two more CD's are planned for the near future, an all-Celtic compilation "Celtic Crescent" and an MP3 CD of their more offbeat humor songs.

Santa Claus is Pagan, Too!
(words & music by Emerald Rose)
Oh, Santa Claus is Pagan too, just like all the rest And if you are a merry witch he`ll bring you all the best So get that star up on the roof, and bake those cookies, too For Christmas-time is really Yule, and Santa`s Pagan too!
Hes got that Buddha belly and his top`s the Holly King You dressed him in that British coat, the cap`s a Nordic thing You took the horns right off his head and stuck them on his deer But he still flies high like Jupiter with a belly-full of beer!
Oh, Santa Claus is Pagan too, just like all the rest And if you are a merry witch he`ll bring you all the best So get that star up on the roof, and bake those cookies, too For Christmas-time is really Yule, and Santa`s Pagan too!
Now history says Christ was likely not a Capricorn But if you want to share the Yule, we don`t care when he's born Come join the celebration of the Sun King`s bright rebirth And if you practice what you preach, we`ll all have peace on Earth!
Oh, Santa Claus is Pagan too, just like all the rest And if you are a merry witch he`ll bring you all the best So get that star up on the roof, and bake those cookies, too For Christmas-time is really Yule, and Santa`s Pagan too!
Now Santa`s way more jolly than most Christians might require And if he weren`t so busy he'd be dancing `round the fire Yeah, you can call it Christmas `cause you got us way out-gunned But just you wait till Beltane, then we`ll see who`s having fun!
Oh, Santa Claus is Pagan too, just like all the rest And if you are a merry witch he`ll bring you all the best So get that star up on the roof, and bake those cookies, too For Christmas-time is really Yule, and Santa`s Pagan too!
