Bardic Circle Featuring Gallows Hill...

Grave Situation
(by Anderson Mar)

Audience Count: 4,696

The Story...

This song ventured my first venture into goth. The story of its conception has potential to evolve into something of a legend. Basically, I was at the first jam session with former vocalist Anderson Mar (back when we were Othniel), and I was tuning my guitar. I just played the first riff off the top of my head to make sure the guitar was in tune, when suddenly Andie just started grooving and singing. As it turned out, her lyric sheet for her song "Grave Situation" was the first one she turned to. Almost mystical, isn't it? I later added my own touch to the lyrics as well as developed the song further until years later, it evolved into the song you hear today. It has since become a fan favorite (peaked at #22 on's Goth Rock charts), and a fun song for Roy and I to play. Enjoy!

This is dedicated with all my heart to my friend Anderson Mar. Thank you so much for giving me my first positive start in music, and to you, I shall be forever grateful.

Recorded: Organized Chaos Studios, ME, 2001

Guests/Players: Lady Sable - lead vox; Kevyn LeBlanc - guitar, programming; Roy Adams - keyboards

Technical Notes: drum machine, electric guitar, keyboards, vocals

Artist Profile: Gallows Hill is a goth rock band that was inspired by Gallows Hill Park in Salem, ME, which is the site where most of the infamous hangings took place, and is the present day site of an annual witches' Samhain gathering in their honor. Originally conceived as "America's answer to Inkubus Sukkubus," GH has since developed its own distinctive sound and fan base.

Grave Situation
(words & music by Anderson Mar)

I'm a graveyard, you are death
We breathe our last eternal breath
Do you hold me in your thoughts?
What could have been and what is not?

But I am sickened by this very thing
A bird can't fly on a broken wing
What you carry in your heart
The very sword that tears us apart

I cling to nothing but my dying self
I give to no one this hand I'm dealt
I seek to render, to right the wrong
Contained within this mournful song

I'm a graveyard, despise the light
Consume my innards on this precious night
I hold to nothing, I cling to none
The dying gasp of the evening sun

But I am sickened by this very thing
A bird can't fly on a broken wing
What you carry in your heart
The very sword that tears us apart

I'm a graveyard, you are life
The marionettes dance on the knife
I now hold you in my grasp
I'm Cleopatra, you are the asp
