Bardic Circle Featuring Jay Atwood...

Sometimes It Rains
(by Jay Atwood (ASCAP))

Audience Count: 3,801

The Story...

So here's the setup: It's night at the Starwood Festival - and we're hangin' by our campfire trying to keep warm. For a few blessed hours, the sky is clear and the stars shine. Someone plays a guitar. The drums by the main ritual fire are the constant heartbeat of the festival.

Then from out of nowhere - it starts to rain...again. But we're here to celebrate nature in all of her forms. The drummers just kick it into a higher gear. We dance in the rain and mud - while songs and sounds from nearby rituals drift through the camp.

Then, as quickly as it came, the sudden shower is gone. We're back at the fire, shivering and loving life.

That's my story. Feel free to dream your own dreams as you listen.

Recorded: 2004, Greenwood Magick Studio

Guests/Players: Just me. The monk sample is courtesy of my friend, Rox. She had her house blessed by a group of Tibetian Monks, and recorded the ritual. (They okay'd it's use)

Technical Notes: Created entirely in my home studio using Sonar 3

Artist Profile: A hot summer night pulses with pagan drums. A massive bonfire flares, illuminating masked revelers.

Ravers and ritualists, hippies and intellectuals, fire-twirlers and nudists all gather together in an ecstatic celebration of the sacred and profane.

This is where I truly live.

It’s a long way, both physically and spiritually, from the conservative Midwestern home where I grew up. My parents were certain that I was destined to become a concert pianist! But life is mysterious, and somehow I found myself at the Starwood Festival (sort of a smaller, eco-spiritual ‘Burning Man’ in upstate New York) . It was there that I first learned to play the didgeridoo, and it was there that my music found a voice.

Now, the rhythms, the chants, the songs and prayers of a myriad cultural traditions whirl and dance in my soul.

Sometimes the dance is a rave, with a pounding techno beat. Other times it a seductive belly dance, all finger-cymbals and perfume. Frequently, I find myself in the psychic chill-room, where a didgeridoo drone guides the seeker to a more contemplative space.

But whether it’s a film score, dance music, or chill, it is this world spirit that permeates my music.

I’m still grateful to my parents for all those years of classical piano lessons.

I’m also glad that my years at Berklee College of Music in Boston gave me the technical know-how to get these pieces out of my head, and onto the CD.

Mostly, I am grateful to those wild and wonderful seekers of truth and beauty that have become my collective muse.
