Imbolc Invocation
(words & music by Sable (Diane Morrison) )

Brighid, bringer of the light
Banish now the dark of night
Hold ye forth a candle's flame
That tells us spring has come again

Vesta, guard our hearth & home
Through the winter kept us warm
Keeper of the sacred flame
Through you, now warmth will come again

Idun, maiden of the spring
Your touch makes all of nature sing
Each youth and babe and bud and flower
Know well they renewal's power

Hathor, goddess of the cow
Bring forth the calves and bless the plow
The beasts of field and farm grow rife
When nourished from your milk of life

Demeter, she who brings the rain
Who ripens fruit and nurtures grain
Return to us from winter's dark
And bud and bloom and bless life's spark

Ushas, herald of the dawn
Release the gates of darkness-bawn
Bring the chariot of the sun
That grants life's light to everyone

Brighid, bringer of the light
Banish now the dark of night
Hold ye forth a candle's flame
That tells us spring has come again

The Story...

I am one of the Daughters of the Flame, a sisterhood of flamekeepers of many faiths who keep a flame burning for Brighid, whether she's perceived as a Celtic/Wiccan goddess, a Christian saint or a Voodoo loa. This order operates in three cells around the world (from the Pacific Coast of Canada and the US to New South Wales, Australia) in the tradition of the Priestesses, then nuns, who continue to keep Brighid's sacred fire at Kildare to this day.

I wrote this piece as a statement of faith the night before Imbolc, when it was my turn to keep the flame. I wrote it off the cuff in less than half an hour, and I recorded it entirely acapella, though I did have to research the goddess names for particular aspects (such as Ushas, a Vedic goddess.) I eventually released it (after re-recording it for better quality) as part of my Ostara 2013 album, "Pyrates & Pagans."

Since then, I have performed this at my CD release party, then again at the Sun Wheel Pagan Arts Festival 2013 in Drayton Valley, AB, where I was honoured to share the stage with Chalice and Blade, Chad McLeary, Vanessa Cardui, the Edmonton Pagan Choir, Sharon Knight and Heather Dale. I guess it was a hit! Vanessa asked to cover it and the Choir asked if I would write them the sheet music of it. I will see what comes of this!

Recorded: Vernon, BC, Canada; March 2013
Guests/Players: Sable (Sable Aradia)

Technical Notes: Acapella ~ Recording: SoundForge

Artist Profile: Independent singer-songwriter, author & composer of New Age, Pagan, filk, acoustic, meditation & goth music. Sable spans numerous musical genres, but her work is inspired by her Wiccan faith and her wild imagination. Her influences include Billie Holiday, Heather Alexander, Leslie Fish, Iron Maiden, Wendy Rule, and Inkubus Sukkubus.
