Desert Song

The Story...
There are many stories of the spiritual seeker trekking out into the wilderness in order to become one with nature and to find enlightenment. This principle is symbolised by the Hermit Tarot card. One version of the myth is seen in the biblical desert meditations and trials of the Christ figure.
Another example, and a major influence for several of the tracks on this album, is found in the novels of Carlos Castaneda. Here are stories of the teacher-sorceror Don Juan who takes his neophyte Carlos on many long treks through the mountains and desert in order to find and experience the ‘Nagual’ - the unknown, or the spiritual side of oneself. There in the desert, Don Juan and Don Genaro guide Carlos through various mind-blasting experiences until he eventually gets to the stage where he can ‘see’ these things. Several of Carlos’ experiences in the wilderness involve what some might interpret as becoming attuned to the Elements. Other of his experiences have a strong shamanistic element. Animals talk to him. A moth communicates with him through its clicking moth call. At one point he turns into a crow. Don Juan often tells Carlos about the lines of energy of the universe which shimmer like gold dust in the air. He talks of these lines and energies as being conscious. (Pullman's "Northern Lights" has similar themes.) Don Juan tells Carlos about the "Eagle" which devours an individual’s consciousness at death. However, the warrior - the enlightened seeker - learns to dodge the Eagle and maintain his experience and consciousness at death and beyond. The Eagle may pause over such an initiate, beak poised at the ready, but will then fly on...
