Beltaine (Calan Mai)
(words & music by Michelle Glover and Ben Glover)On the eve of Summer’s dawn when blooms the white hawthorn two fires shall ye build under Diana’s full moon
To the summer grazing lands and green mountain grounds send cattle down the hill blessed by the fires’ hand
Calan Mai, Calan Mai Lord and Lady’s holy day Calan Mai, Calan Mai Spring Lord and Lady May
Sunwise round juniper flames leap the fire on this Beltane and to the guardians of the hill call their silent names
Those across the western sea green mound or old oak tree leave gifts and wait there still for these - the People of Peace
Oak King and Holly King the Old One, sun shining wild is his domain with antlered ring
Lady of the Moon all creatures in your womb we call at High Beltaine with twigs of rowan strewn
Calan Mai, Calan Mai Lord and Lady’s holy day Calan Mai, Calan Mai Spring Lord and Lady May

The Story...
"Calan Mai" is a new track from Magicfolk, written to celebrate Beltaine 2012.
This song combines various old celtic traditions as well as wiccan / pagan perspectives. It is a celebration of May Day and Beltaine, and the building of fires which confer blessings to the community.
One of the earliest references to Beltaine is in "Sanas Chormaic", an early medieval Irish glossary which describes the "lucky fire".
At one time, Beltaine bonfires were lit over most of Ireland. In the rural south in the 1820s, celebrations were held where the cows leapt over lighted straw to save the milk being pilfered by the "good people" or fairies.
Various traditions refer to two fires being built "with great incantations", and cattle being driven between the fires in order to confer blessings on them for the season ahead in the fields; the summer pastures.
Local spirits (often associated with the elven peoples) who abide in the surrounding trees and stones and things of nature, are also called upon and gifts offered to them, in order to appease them and ask their protection.
"This to thee, O hooded Crow! This to thee, O Eagle!"
The duality of the Lady of the Moon and the Horned One are invoked to bring spiritual balance to the rite.
