Bardic Circle Featuring...
(words & music by Hobbyhorse)
Six months he hasn't come to me
Angus has come and gone
In the mirror of the blue lake
My spirit has become a white swan
Chains of gold hold me to the cruel
Seasons that push me on
But when the sun went down
I heard Angus Og
Calling my name through the night
I met him on the shore
And together we soar
Upward with delight
With eternal wings of light

Many of Hobbyhorse’s songs are inspired by Gods, Goddesses, characters and dramas of world mythology. "Angus Og" is inspired by the Celtic God of love. This song is from the point of view of Caer, a magical young woman who has had a love affair with Angus. They have been separated for a time, and Caer is longing for Angus as she waits for him to reappear by the side of a beautiful but lonely lake.
Our first recording of "Angus Og" appears on our "Break In The Clouds" CD, but this second recording is closer to the original conception of the song - sparse loneliness with echoes of the ancient Celtic love god half-hallucinated in the mist.
Having recorded the basic tracks, we had the idea to illustrate the story by filling the background with actual sounds of a lake at twilight. So the adventure began…
We live at the foot of a mountain in the Santa Cruz coastal range. Near the top of that mountain is a nature preserve with a lake. Phil drove up one evening and made the short hike to the lake with a stereo microphone and portable recorder. He set up on a dock jutting out over the lake, walked away and waited quietly as the sun went down. The birds sang beautifully. Unfortunately, so did the airplanes, automobiles and a few motorcycles! Out of a 25 minute recording there were only 4 minutes of pure nature sounds but, with careful editing, that was enough to complete the CD of Angus Og that you now hear.
