Belthane Fires
(words & music by Laura Powers)Belthane Fires BELTHANE FIRES (Laura Powers)
Oh the fire of Belthane nights High, high the firelight And my love I’ll meet you there The turn of May the sweet night air
Oh, the spell the magic strewn The lovers’ kiss beneath the moon And I know my hearts desire Will reflect in the Belthane fire
A circle cast a circle drawn A blackthorn bush a willow wand
And oh, my love there is no sleep For in this dark my eyes can see By this night, by yon oak tree By the fires of Belthane come to me

The Story...
Belthane Fires--new video on Youtube--the link to the MP3 will take you to the video. This was recorded when I had first got my home studio. It was great not be watching the studio clock and realizing I was free to experiment. In fact, if I remember correctly, I cracked open a beer, since I could do "whatever I wanted, " and started the tape of previously recorded bagpipes going along with a drum loop. I'm sure I had some lyrics down, but when I got the pipes/drumloop going I recorded the vocal in one take. You can hear that the breaks are improvised. I like the way it ended, and knowing you can try to recreate something and never get it to happen again, I kept it. So, most of the vocals were done in one take. I went back and rewrote some of the lyrics and punched in a few places and that was it--trying to keep the freshness of what happened the first time. It was a different sound that I'd done before, and I like to change it up a bit.
I was going for the sensuality of Belthane and the passion of the fires, the setting--all the good stuff! I have another song that is the romantic answer to this song called "The Hunt is Sweetest" and it's a different take on Belthane.

Artist Profile: Laura’s long-time fascination with Celtic mythology led her to create the “Legends of the Goddess” trilogy (Legends of the Goddess, Beyond the Pale: Legends of the Goddess II, and Trilogy: Legends of the Goddess III) which features musical themes based on the Celtic goddess of ancient myth. Enhanced by instrumentation such as tin whistle, uilleann pipes and Irish flute, the influence of folk and pop can be heard throughout the records and lyrically, it is the metaphysical/mythological aspect of Celtic legends that is the central focus. In addition, Powers also created original cover art on all three CDs, melding the lyrical imagery with her oil paintings to present a timeless collection of music and art. Explains Powers, "When I write music for my CDs, I think partially in terms of the kind of music that I'd like to paint to, because when I paint I'm on a different level of awareness. I wanted songs that would help take me, and the listener, to that level. But the best reward is making a connection with a listener who enjoys the music and is writing to let me know how a song touched their life in some way or is asking me to sign a CD to them. At the end of the day, the connection is the thing, and music is the messenger."
