Belthane Fires
(words & music by Laura Powers)Oh the fire of Belthane nights High, high the firelight And my love I’ll meet you there The turn of May the sweet night air
Oh, the spell the magic strewn The lovers’ kiss beneath the moon And I know my hearts desire Will reflect in the Belthane fire
A circle cast a circle drawn A blackthorn bush a willow wand
And oh, my love there is no sleep For in this dark my eyes can see By this night, by yon oak tree By the fires of Belthane come to me

The Story...
"Belthane Fires" is from my second cd in the "legends of the Goddess" trilogy. Initially inspired by the book "The Mists of Avalon" I was intrigued by the stories and myths of the ancient Celtic goddess and have devoted this three-cd set to interweaving imagery of that era with music that I call "Celtic-flavored world/pop." Some have considered the music along the lines of Loreena McKennitt.
While most of my songs are more thought out, this one had a stream of consciousness approach. I simply sang to the drum loop and the randomly overdubbed bagpipes. Highland pipes are in the key of B flat, so I just went with the flow. Interestingly, the drum loop stopped and the ending of the song you hear was the first take. I felt there were alot of the first-take vocals that had a special vibe, so I kept most of it and changed some words here and there to fit the initial story flow a little better. It is a bit edgier than most of my songs, but it's fun to sing live and gets good crowd response.
Someone suggested that it was too raw to put on the cd, which has a lush production value, but I thought it added a special attitude, and hey, part of me did it because as an independent artist, I can do whatever I want creatively! That is a beautiful thing. Thanks for listening!
Recorded: Los Angeles/Nashville
Guests/Players: Hunter Lee on Highland pipes, Bryan Cumming on synth, Laura Powers vocal
Technical Notes: Highland/Scottish bagpipes, synth, drumloop and vocal
Artist Profile: “Legends of the Goddess” and “Beyond the Pale: Legends of the Goddess II,” on Red Harp Records are the first and second cd in a three volume collection (The Goddess Series) which feature musical themes based on the Celtic Goddess of ancient myth. The music is enhanced by instrumentation such as tin whistle, uilleann pipes and Irish flute. From songs like the mythical "Morrighan’s Quest" to "Answer Me With Silence," her music captures the heart and soothes the spirit. The final cd of the series “Legends of the Goddess III” will be available in June 2003.
The daughter of a military officer, Laura Powers spent much of her youth living in various parts of the world. She studied abroad and began singing professionally in college. She went on to land a recording deal with Carrere Records in Paris, France where she had several successful singles and appeared internationally on radio and television, including Radio Luxemburg. In addition to her background as a live performer, Powers' craftsmanship as a songwriter has made a name for herself in the music and film industries and her songs have been covered by numerous recording artists.
Powers, who first began songwriting in her late teens says, "I'm drawn to writing songs that have a strong melody, beautiful harmonies and layered vocal arrangements. I’m also influenced by the time-honored structure of the great songs of earlier eras."
What the reviewers said: Magical Blend: “The music is a powerful and haunting blend of Celtic rhythms, containing fiddle, mandolin, guitar, Irish flute, accordion and Uilleann pipes. Laura Powers has a magnificent voice and will soon be listed among such singers as Loreena McKennitt, Mary Black and Enya”—John Osborne
New Age Retailer: “Powers sings with passion and conviction, her strong voice ringing out like the goddess she sings of. A delightful discovery, “Legends of the Goddess” is a terrific first effort by a talented new artist.”—Steve Ryals
“Legends of the Goddess” Powers’ first cd, charted at number 38 for national airplay in trade publication New Age Voice, and was finalist for New Age Voice’s “Vocal Album of the Year” in 1998. In 2002 she received an Emmy nomination for music she was commissioned to create for a Public television campaign.
