On The Balance
(words & music by Peter Paddon)

On the Balance

1
The challenges have been met
And in timely frame
The first time you showed your skill
The day you earned your name

2
She told you you would be nameless
Your name was hers to give
A gift she would never offer
As long as she did live

Chorus
But you were led by the hand of the trickster
On the balance you did stand
Your adventures a perilous journey
The path from boyhood to the man

Refrain
She couldn’t stop you
From taking what was yours
She could only make you earn it
The eagle in you soars…

3
The illusion of battle caused her
To place weapons in your hand
You took hold of your own manhood
The master of your Land

4
But there was still something missing
What you needed was a wife
The Trickster was there to help you
It would only cost your life

Chorus

Refrain
Innocence is no shield
For the hunter’s guile
She sought out your deadly secret
With a simple smile
5
You stood on the cauldron, balanced
As the hunter took his shot
The sound of your body falling
Though your spirit was not

6
Flying across the treetops
Till the Trickster brought you down
Now that you are immortal
You wear your father’s crown

Refrain
Ignorance is no defense
The hunter met his fate
You sought for poetic justice
For the lover of your mate

Chorus
The Trickster led you true
To the person that you must be
On the balance is where I find you
Where you truly set me free.

The Story...

I set myself a task of writing a song for each of the Quarter Guardians that we use in our circles - a Lord and a Lady at each Quarter. Because of events that caused my lifeto become extremely busy, I only got the lyrics of six written, and I recorded two. This one is the first, and my favorite, as it was written for Llew, who is my Patron. It is a very personal view of His story, from the perspective of the Path I walk.

I've always loved writing poetry and making music - I even earned a living for a year in the UK, singing in pubs and clubs. But I've never pursued it as a career, because I don't think I'm good enough.

These days, life gives me little time for music, but I make the most of what I get. And I'll finish those eight songs oneday, and put them out on a CD, just to say I did. Hope you like it, please excuse the amatuer mix.

In the way I work ritually, Llew is the male Guardian of the East, where we encounter the quality of Light that is represented by Fire (not to be confused with the elements of the Golden Dawn system) . His partner in this quarter is Fraidd, the Welsh forge-maiden who is the counterpart of Brighid.

Bendith,

Peter

Recorded: At home, using Sonar 4, Feb 2003
Guests/Players: Everything on this recording was done by Peter, in the absense of real musicians or technicians

Technical Notes: Recorded using Sonar 4 on a PC.
Guitar - Epiphone accoustic
Keyboard - Absynth 2 with MIDI keyboard
Vocals recorded using Audio Technica mic

Artist Profile: Born in England of a Welsh mother, Peter grew up in the vacinity of Stonehenge, which his mother always though accounted for the way he turned out. His father was both Witch and Ceremonial Magician, but taught him little, due to being struck down by a series of strokes, and Peter learnt first from Alexandrian Wicca, and then in the US he encountered teachers of the Old Ways, which he willingly embraced.

Musically, Peter is self-taught. He had the pleasure in his high-school years of regularly being part of a mass choir at Canterbury Cathedral, and over the years has taught himself guitar, a modicum of keyboards, and to drum with ethnic drums.
