The Magus
(words & music by Michael Dolan)The Magus
Get my robe I'm out the door There's a north wind coming that I can't ignore With my back to the mountains in the south so high feel the white caps crashing on the shore to my side
The storm howls like Gaia's Choir Hear the thunder rising as I light my fire Breathe deep the acrid smell of flames And the power of the earth runs through my veins
As as it all sinks in the forces I'm beholding My world is unfolding
My Will be done...
A force of nature floods my brain Earth wind fire mind and rain Reach up my hand to pull the sun bind the elements into one
Burn in the sacred seal To crystalize the moment and make it real A realtime reaction tuns lead into gold and leaves a radiant indelible mark on the soul
I reach into my soul To keep my self control Lead into gold
My will be done...

The Story...
I've been identifying myself as Pagan just a little longer than I've been playing music- 20 years for both, give or take. Until a couple years ago, most of my writing was a bit more secular. Over the past year or so though, I've written a couple more Pagan-minded songs, and had been yearning to do a full album dedicated to such.
A few weeks ago, our local arts and entertainment paper, The Wire, announced the RPM Challenge. The goal is to record an album in 28 days. At the present, over 200 local acts have signed on. I looked at this and thought- well, here's my chance to record the album I've been wanting to do. So there it is- there will be a full album of new material set for a release the first week of March.
The Magus is the first completed song off the album. A bit more prog-rock than I normally go, it felt fitting with the vaguely Thelemic vibe of the lyrics.
I had fun with this one, and payed a little more attention to production quality. The bass for the interlude is actually repeating the 2 chord pattern from the intro- the dreamy guitar uses a 3-3-3-3-4 syncopation that contrasts nicely with the straight beat on the bass.
Lyricly, it depicts an alchemical ritual- but rather than symbolizing the elements, it draws power by just hurling yourself into the middle of them. Who needs incense and a little cup of water when you have a raging thunderstorm handy?
Recorded: My home studio in southern New Hampshire
Guests/Players: Just me and a little synthesized choir towards the end.
Technical Notes: Made on a Mac using GarageBand (a program so great it's replaced my $600 pro-level recording software) , an M-Audio FW-410, Evolution UC-33, Oktava 319 mic, and my trusty '97 Roadhouse Strat.
Artist Profile: Michael Dolan, or The Reverend Rat as he's known onstage, is a musician and artist from southern New Hampshire. When not recording, he crafts ritual tools under the name Haunted Wood Crafts. He also likes doing his rituals on the beach during a thunderstorm.
