Out of the Corner of the Eye (Live)
(words & music by Ariana & KIVA)Off the beaten path Far Ago and Long Away Not so you'd know it, they saw us learn to pray Just a step away, just a breath away, we dance here the fey ones. We speak to you in ancient language. We see you can you see us. We are the smoke in your fire. We are the uneasy feeling in your bones. Out of the corner of the eye we are. Out of the corner of the eye we are... You are never really, never really, never really, alone. Some call us angels or devils, faeries or a ghost. We are what we are. We are what we are. Just a step away, just a breath away.

The Story...
This is a newly made LIVE recording of KIVA's Out of the Corner of the Eye. "Corner" is the title track of our new album of the same name. The release date of Out of the Corner of the Eye was May 5, 2006 and we are very happy with this album. Like many of our songs in KIVA these days, Out of the Corner of the Eye was created by the band jamming on a really cool riff and Ariana being inspired to write lyrics on the fly. One winter night in 2005, with a fire going in the fireplace, Jim Brewster started playing a beautiful and powerful bass line that inspired everyone to pick up their instruments and play along. Ariana picked up her pen and started writing the lyrics that came into her mind and encouraged the band to keep playing. When she was done with the majority of the lyrics she started to sing with the band and Out of the Corner of the Eye was born. This is a song about those beings that you do not see when you look straight at them, only out of the corner of your eye. It's from their perspective and they are inviting us to see them, to feel them, to awaken and hear them. They are just a step away, just a breath away. This recording was done at the 2006 Free Spirit Gathering at which KIVA has played often. We LOVE our audience!!!
KIVA has been together, now, for 16 years and the current configuration of KIVA has been playing together for around 7 of those years. We were written up in Faerie Magazine in their Winter 2005 issue with a 3 page article and one of the results was that we got to play at Maryland Faerie Festival, Spoutwood Faerie Festival, and Western PA Fairie Festival this year. Our goal is to play even more festivals and get overseas again soon.

KIVA is a percussive, acoustic, world fusion and mystical folk ensemble that celebrates the magic of nature and ancient bardic traditions with music that opens the heart and heals the spirit. The band blends strong vocal harmonies with rich and diverse acoustic and electric instrumentation, performing originals, traditionals, and covers. The musicians are inspired by many cultures, spiritual disciplines, and musical styles, including celtic-folk, folk-rock, blues, big band, traditional chants, and jazz. KIVA is based in the Washington DC metro area, and has been nominated fourteen times (so far) for the Washington Area Music (Wammie) Award.
