We Have Returned
(words & music by Amikaeyla Proudfoot Gaston)

As we walked through the forest
And danced to drums by firelight
We could feel our spirits soaring, sailing upward into the night.
As we sang all our chants to Orisha, Native spirit, Hindu, Buddah, Pagan Moon.
And as we threw stones and bones down onto Mother Earth we could hear this ancient tune.

We are the witches and we have been burned
We are your power source within that you must learn
We're intuition crying to be heard
We are the witches and we have returned

We are hearing your voice calling our name
Oh Yemaya, Oh Yemaya
In the water, in the air, in the creatures everywhere

We are the mystics and we have been burned
We are your power source within that you must learn
We're intuition crying to be heard
We are the mystics and we have returned.

Although chains tried to enslave us and the whips they cut our flesh, evil ones were forced upon us, but our spirits they could not crush.
Through gas chambers and slave ships, remnants of war we survived through our children and our chants.
And the bones that lie in the womb of Mother Earth hear us through our singing and our dance.

We are the soldiers and we have been burned
We are the power source within that you must learn
We're intuition crying to be heard
We are the soldiers and we have returned.

We are the Witches and we have been burned
We are those Mystics deep within that you must learn
We are the Soldiers crying to be heard
We are your Conscience and we have returned

The Story...

Many years ago Ariana heard a story about the Strega in Rome. She heard that, on Beltaine, they marched in the streets of Rome chanting "We are the Witches and We have Returned" all the way to the Vatican gates. Ariana told this story to Amikaeyla who was inspired to write the song "We Have Returned". She has performed it with KIVA in many places, including on their trip to England, playing at the Billingham International Folklore Festival. This is a recording of their performance at Amikaeyla's CD release party in Washington, DC of her album, Mosaic. Amikaeyla won 5 Washington Area Music Awards for Mosaic, a very rare feat! The live recording from the CD release party had a very limited release so Ami and Ariana decided to put a couple of the recordings from this live performance on their Limited Edition Collector's Release of Serpent Woman and Faerie Child. This recording has 10 songs on it - 6 are from the final chant album that will be out in September (called Oshun Gaia) . Ami and Ariana did the Limited Edition release with these special songs in order to raise funds to help pay for the final chant album so they included songs that won't be on the final release to make Serpent Woman and Faerie Child a very unique release. To further increase it's value they also are only releasing 200 copies. There's about 30 of these CDs left. They are numbered and signed. The studio version of We Have Returned is available on Mosaic (also on KIVA's web site) .

Artist Profile: Amikaeyla Proudfoot Gaston has been guest performing with KIVA for many years and she went to England with us. Ami's musical career began at age four, studying classical piano, flute and vocals for over 20 years. As a trained vocalist, her musical techniques include classical choral opera, a cappella madrigals, jazz, blues, rock, funk, and international styles from West Africa and South India. She has performed at the Kennedy Center and with the Lisner Symphony; Yasmeen from Sweet Honey in the Rock; the Gaston Jazz Quartet; Dahjay West African Pop Band; Imani A Cappella; Bottomland; Bloodroot A Cappella Duo; Fire & Earth Folk and American Folklore troupe; Caravan, South Indian Healing Music Ensemble; Mama Muti Healing Drums and Music; and Rhythm Alive Dance and Drum Assembly. Other performances include off-Broadway productions of Jesus Christ Superstar as Mary Magdalene, and Lady Sings the Blues as Billie Holliday. She also went to India and performed Native American chants for the Dalai Lama at his World Sacred Chant Festival.
Amikaeyla is now doing a wonderful children's show called "The Elephant's Child" and her usual vast array of many projects continues.
