Glimmer on a Grave
(words & music by Candice Christiansen)

Grey twilight falls
And the moonlight calls
My emotions stall
As we both recall

How I have buried you
Memory can not replace the loss

How I have captured you
Put you in a place I cannot cross

My eyes could glimmer on his grave
My eyes could glimmer on his grave

Glimmer on a Grave
(by Candice Christiansen)

The Story...

I heard the line, "my eyes could glimmer on his grave" in a dream, as well as the bell tones. I woke up from that dream, and it was about 6am, and I groggily came down to my computer to put it on Finale NotePad (free notation software from codamusic.com) and for several days was caught up in the moods of that dream, and the simple melody line. I came up with a verse, and about 3 or 4 months later worked it up on a computer at school. My friends and coworkers love it. It's definitely a Dark Power song. The lyrics are about (you guessed it) my first ex-boyfriend. I was 16 and afraid of all the drama I'd heard about from other people having broken up with their boyfriends and how people take each other back and still see each other, and I could see how much pain they were in because of it. So after I broke up with him, I repressed him within myself, and outside myself. He followed me from class to class, trying to prove his love, but I got scared. He had had problems with nightmares and depression, and we had the same guidance counselor. I made him skip class with me and we sat down to talk about it. I finally convinced him to see his guidance counselor, and then I didn't see him for a week. I took 6 detentions for the three classes we missed, 2 detentions per class because one was his and one was mine. I made my dean give me his detentions, because I didn't feel that he should be punished for something I made him do. And his parents didn't respond to my calls. And when he came back, i found out he was selling his prozac to the other students, and he started getting physical, and he wouldn't stop when I said no. I broke up with him before things got worse, and i wouldn't allow anyone to speak about him in front of me. He followed me around, like I said, for about a week, and then I told on him. And the next week he was gone.

Just this past year, in Spring of 2006, my friends all started work on a project called Clockwork Waltz. I asked them if they needed an accordion player, and they said, yeah, but Jack (his chosen name) wrote it and would be very involved. It had been at least 7 or 8 years since I'd seen him. I kept my offer firm. I'd heard reports that he'd mellowed out since he'd moved away from home, and many of my friends thought i should talk with him again, and had had non threatening experiences with him. I had the dream and wrote the song, and sort of forgot about it until summer, when the play was going up. I worked on my music and I presented it to my friends before going to the dress rehearsal. But Coyote struck, and I had to get my wisdom teeth out during the very weekend that A. My boyfriend was moving out and B. Clockwork Waltz was going up.

Not to worry. He walked into the hotel I work at on Dec. 23rd. with his girlfriend. I was working 3rd shift, and he's a night person, and we chatted all night. It was strange. It was liberating. I still don't know how to deal with it, but the emotions I felt were just bursting inside me like a second sun. It was good.

Recorded: 2006 Providence
Guests/Players: Candice Christiansen, Keyboards, Vocals

Technical Notes: I used GarageBand on a Macintosh at school. That's pretty much it. I play keyboard, and I love to experiment.

Artist Profile: I am 23 years old and have been writing music since the age of 14. I'm a music major and I'm currently working on my bachelor's degree in Music Education. My dream, however, is to be a famous singer/songwriter. I don't know what the future holds.
