Valley Song
(words & music by Kate Fletcher)

VALLEY SONG

Come to the valley, the beautiful valley
Where body and spirit are honoured as one
Come to the valley, the beautiful valley
Come to the valley and sing
Walk in the forest, the murmuring forest
That covers the mountain, the immoveable mountain
Run through the meadow, down in the valley
Where body and spirit are honoured as one

Walk in the forest, wash in the river
Laugh in the meadow or weep in the cave
Breathe in the spirit
Come to the valley and sing

Climb up the mountain, the immoveable mountain
The mountain that watches the valley below
Look down on the valley, this beautiful valley
Where body and spirit are honoured as one
Enter the cavern, the dark of the cave
Deep in the mountain where waterfalls sing to you
Sing to the valley, this beautiful valley
Where body and spirit are honoured as one

Walk in the forest...

Drink from the river, the glistening river
That flows from the mountain, the immoveable mountain
Bathe in the waters, these emerald waters
High in the moutain if high you will go

Walk in the forest...

The Story...

In 2000, I went on a 5-day Singing Workshop run by a friend of mine. I had spent many years running voice workshops of my own and it had been a long time since I had taken time out to nurture my own singing.

The Course was held in a remote and very beautiful valley in Wales. As a professional singer, it was utterly liberating to be in a setting where I could just let my voice be ugly or unpleasant if I wanted or needed, and for the first time I was able to sing with my whole voice, pretty or not. We walked and sang and splashed and ran, sometimes we talked and sometimes we were silent.

I came away with a whole new perspective on life and singing. I felt like I had joined back up the things that had become disconnected, and my band didn't like me any more!

A year or two later, after the dust had settled, I went to another beautiful place that I visit regularly. The Isle of Erraid had became a refuge where the new balance between the physical and spiritual could thrive.

I was sitting outside one morning in the sunshine, with my guitar in my hands and out it popped, a whole song, all finished. It had been brewing all that time and I had obviously made sense of the Singing Course in Wales after all.

It was written in 2002 but I didn't record it until 2006/7 when I finally got it together to record a solo CD. I had always worked with a band until 2001 and it took a long time to find the pluck to go it alone.

I engaged the very lovely Robert Harbron to engineer and produce my opus, but when our studio booking fell through at the last minute, he brought his recording gear to Dorset and instead I made my CD in a caravan with a very dodgy 240V supply under spreading oak trees and once again, fittingly for this song, far from the buslte and busy-ness.

I played everything myself. The biggest deal was the Native American style flute on this song. My partner Corwen is a seriously good whistle player and the temptation to bottle out and get him to do it for me was great! But I held fast and I played it myself, the which I am immensly proud of!

Recorded: Wessex winter 2006/7.
Guests/Players: Kate Fletcher

Technical Notes: Guitar by Stanford, with a Headway pickup. Native American style flute by Nick Cox of Bournemouth. Recorded on an Apple PC running Protools. Recorded and produced by Robert Harbron.

Artist Profile: Kate Fletcher is a singer songwriter and folk musician from England. Here is the biog from her website:

"Raised on porridge and song in a family of eccentric musicians in Reading.

Great ambition to be a diplomat so studied languages very hard, and lived in France and Spain. Got a mad idea to walk back to Spain one day...

Wrote my first song at 19 and worked with my brother Colin on crafting and recording songs.

Lived in France and decided I should have studied music after all. After failing to get into the Foreign Office, recession left me unemployed and so I took to playing music all night under Isambard Kingdom Brunel's railway bridges at Kennetmouth, Reading.

Bought a Narrowboat to live on. Everyone said it was a phase. I still have the boat. It's green at the moment.

Formed a band, called Epona, which did really well. Played mostly my songs, usually written in collaboration with one or both brothers. Nancy came to play with us, and then Tony. Made an album, which included a song about walking to Spain...

Started teaching voice. Took time out to train as music teacher. Started writing and performing solo.

Met Corwen who also wanted to walk to Spain... Wrote a song about being nearly ready to walk to Spain...

Walked to Spain. Came home by bus and decided to record solo album at last now walking to Spain out of the way. Moved in with Corwen and started teaching in Dorset.

Walked across Norway. Just for fun.

Recorded my solo album, Fruit, with Robert Harbron doing all the techy stuff. We had a lot of fun in caravans."
