Persephone
(by Michelle Glover)

Audience Count: 5,132

The Story...

This song is inspired by the Greek myth of Persephone.

Persephone is on the one hand, Queen of the Underworld, who guides souls through the darkness and the period of sleep that winter represents.

On the other hand she is Goddess of the Spring, returning from the abode of Hades to rejoin her mother, Demeter (Mother Goddess of crops, abundance, growth, etc) in the light of a new spring and period of growth.

This myth isn't necessarily talking about literal death, but a symbolic death or ending of the old outworn ways, feelings, personality issues which hold the soul back from spiritual progress. Once these things are shed, the load is lifted, and new life, new phases, can take place.

The song is about wanting to follow Persephone down into the Underworld, which although sounds a little dark, is a positive sign that one is ready to give up something old, to 'die the death' to it, and to come back renewed.

I wrote the song on an old acoustic guitar - one my mother gave me when I was very young, and that I still use to compose songs on. It was one of those songs which just came from feeling in a certain way.

This is a clip - as we've only just released the debut album on CD - so we're not as yet allowing full songs to be distributed online, but hopefully it will give enough of a flavour.

Brightest and best wishes
Michelle - from Magicfolk

Recorded: Ashwood Studios, Norfolk, UK, 2007
Guests/Players: Michelle - vocals, acoustic guitar
Geoff Charlton - drums
Miki Kovalkovic - keyboards
Josephone - flute
Sotos - bouzouki
Jay - bass
Tom Abbott - banjo
Andy Hines - lead guitar

Technical Notes: A mix of traditional and electric instruments:

acoustic and electric guitars, bouzouki, keyboards, drums, bass, flute, banjo.

Artist Profile: “Genuinely something new for fans of esoteric folk, their lyrics sing of folklore and magic, evoking the mystery within the music." (Woven Wheat Whispers)

Magicfolk is a 6-piece British psychedelic-folk band based in Norfolk UK, producing their own blend of folk, rock, celtic and prog-rock with rich vocal harmonies and an assortment of instruments, in songs with mythological and mystic leanings.

"A raft of magical spells, a silver blade wrapped in lace" (Folkwords)

Their material touches upon a whole range of esoteric inspirations, including those found in Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Hermetic, Shamanic, Wiccan and Pagan traditions, and more.

Their debut album is available direct from their website, or as a download from iTunes. And they are presently finishing their 2nd album - due for release in 2011.

“Prog rock, celtic tunes and tight vocal harmony, spiked with prickly electric guitar. If you like Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull and Jefferson Airplane, you won’t be disappointed.” (Pagan Dawn Magazine)

“Memorable and beautifully arranged” (Radio Centraal Belgium)
