Fire and Snow
(words & music by Annie)They're at my window With wild eyes Furious flames Chanting my name Through the back door I run for the trees Where will I go Between Fire and Snow
I fall down On a cold white stone Slowly I turn Watch it all burn I raise my hand To the raging sky I pull it down Over this town Of Fire and Snow Fire and Snow

The Story...
Moll Dyer, Persecuted as a Witch in 17th Century Maryland
Our song "Fire and Snow" is about Moll Dyer, a woman who was persecuted as a witch in Leonardtown, Maryland back in the late 1600's. According to legend, Moll Dyer was a mysterious woman who lived alone and had knowledge of herbal healing. During a harsh winter, the townspeople became suspicious of her and accused her of being a witch. They came to her door one night and set her house on fire. Moll fled to the nearby woods. She collapsed on a rock, balanced one hand upon it, and raised the other while calling a curse down upon the town. A young boy found her the next day. On the rock was burned an impression of her hand and knee. In 1975 a historian located the site where her house may have been. Not far away was a large 875 pound boulder with what looked like the marks of Moll's hand and knee. Our song brings to life Moll's last moments when she is trapped between the extreme elements of fire and snow. There is no hope for her to survive, but her spirit is strong and lives in this legend, in ghostly sightings and beyond.
Recorded: Recorded 2007 at Hobbyhorse Ranch, Palo Alto CA
Guests/Players: Annie - Voice and frame drum Phil - other instruments
Technical Notes: Recorded by Hobbyhorse at Hobbyhorse Ranch using a variety of acoustic and electric instruments. Not a "pretty" song, but it isn't a pretty story. We tried to make the musical arrangement reflect the terror and confusion of mob violence and ever-mounting flames.
Artist Profile: Hobbyhorse is a progressive folk/rock duo with songs inspired by World Mythology, love and the adventures of the Spirit! We are from the San Francisco bay area.
