Sheba
(by Michelle Glover)

The Story...
You know those ‘dreams’ which are so real that the next day you’re wondering whether you dreamt it or it really happened? And you know those dreams or pictures you get at certain times which you know full well are not just the usual type of dream or imaginative musing…?
This song is based on such a vision that I had - one of those astral-like utterly crystal-clear pictures that suddenly drop into your mind whilst in a hypnogogic state between waking and sleep.
In fact it was originally called ‘Vision in the Desert’, or just ‘Vision’, but it became known as ‘Sheba’ during rehearsals and the name stuck, even though Sheba is more of a tangential reference in the song.
The experience spoke to me of a past-life memory. I’m not sure where it was, but it was in a hot country - perhaps Africa, or Greece, or somewhere else. Someone had locked me up in a prison, a person who had been close to me, he’d locked me up and thrown away the key. And as I watched from the window which overlooked the desert plain, I saw him walking away, his feet stirring up the dust up from the dry land. He’d turned away, I don’t know why, and he walked away without looking back, into the heat waves of the desert, and I could do absolutely nothing about it.
I know this person today - but he’s not close to me in this life, he’s just an acquaintance, someone I work with now and then. But these memories of past lives can come to you for various reasons - I don’t think that they necessarily mean that things should be the same as they were before, the same patterns repeated - ad finitum. Something else may have been clarified for me through this vision.
Anyway, back to the song… Recording it was a real pleasure, and it was one of those which turned out better than you could hope for. The first gem was Geoff who overlaid the drum kit with congas and darabuka which gave it a wonderful ethnicy and otherworldly feel. The second gem was Ozzita and her beautiful backing vocals which she performed even better than how I’d always imagined them to be. Andy then interlaced some simple but effective lead guitar lines which brought the song a few subtle psychedelic moments and added to one of the main themes of the track - that of dream versus reality.
Castaneda would have a lot to say about dreams and ‘reality’. My view is that the only real thing in the world is - experience.
And so, one’s experience - whether of a dreamed or waking conscious state is always - real.
So in this respect, dreams can be very real indeed. And life - sometimes can be very unreal.
Dreaming - and the astral plane - is where things really start to happen.

Artist Profile: Magicfolk is a British esoteric psych-folk band, producing its own blend of folk, rock, celtic and prog-rock with rich vocal harmonies and an assortment of instruments, in songs with mythological and mystic leanings.
“Like the bright sun burning through the morning fog, Magicfolk come bearing tradition, vision, passion and mysticism” (Exposé Magazine)
Their material touches upon a whole range of esoteric inspirations, including those found in Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Hermetic, Shamanic, Wiccan, Pagan and other traditions.
“Genuinely something new for fans of esoteric folk, their lyrics sing of folklore and magic, evoking the mystery within the music" (Woven Wheat Whispers)
The music is grounded in acoustic instrumentation and layered vocals, which then often develop into raucous rock, jazz and psychedelic improvisations. They also have gentle songs which “take you to other more restful places”.
“Prog rock, celtic tunes and tight vocal harmony, spiked with prickly electric guitar. If you like Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull and Jefferson Airplane, you won’t be disappointed.” (Pagan Dawn Magazine)
Their debut album is available direct from their website, or as a download from iTunes. And they are presently finishing their 2nd album - due for release in 2011.
"A raft of magical spells... a silver blade wrapped in lace" (Folkwords)
