 Hobbes ...
La Befana
(by Hobbes)

Audience Count: 12,873

The Story...
La Befana vien di notte con le scarpe tutte rotte col vestito alla "romana" viva viva la Befana !!
Porta cenere e carboni ai bambini cattivoni ai bambini belli e buoni porta chicchi e tanti doni !
This traditional Italian folktale tells the story of an old woman who discovers the magic of the holiday season thanks to a little boy. In Italian culture, Befana is witchy version of Santa Claus as she flies on her broomstick and visits the children of Italy on the eve of the 6th of January, leaving sweets for the good ones and lumps of coal (or dark candy) for the bad ones. The word "Befana" is Italian for epiphany, which is that moment when everything suddenly makes sense.
This story was told in Montreal in December 2008 during the two-day Yule Fair hosted by the Montreal Pagan Resource centre (http://www.paganuniverse.com/mprc/) and The Magical Blend shop (http://www.themagicalblend.com) . There were about a dozen listeners in the audience and this was one story in a set of five tales, all themed around the joys and frustrations of the Winter season. Shayne Gryn is the musician playing improvisational acoustic guitar during the performance.
Recorded: December 2008, Montreal, Quebec
Guests/Players: Shayne Grn (musician)
Technical Notes: recorded with a Samson CO1U USB Studio Condensor microphone plugged directly into a laptop
Artist Profile: Originally from Quebec city, Hobbes has been living in Montreal since the spring 1993. He's a professional and published writer, working as a technical writer by day (http://www.documentia.ca) and telling tales as a storyteller by night. In February of 2005, he published his first book/CD of stories called You Don't Know Jack.
Hobbes is currently the president of the Montreal Pagan Resource Centre and believes in providing opportunities and offering choices to the local pagan community. He has organized and led several public rituals, hosts a monthly Pagan Sunday Brunch, and teaches a beginner's class in Paganism with the Crescent Moon School of Magic and Paganism.
In terms of his own spiritual path, it's a long and winding one. Not content with any one path or tradition, he explores freely finding truth and enlightenment in a variety of cultures and perspectives.
